Twinkle Eye Iridescent Paint
« on: November 20, 2017, 05:01:46 AM »
Does anyone have a photo of both a twinkle eye pony with the eye paint intact, and one that's missing it.  For comparison.

I don't think I've ever gotten a TE pony that still had the eye paint.  I'm not even sure I know exactly what they're supposed to look like.

Here are some pics I took of whizzer and speedy (with paint) compared to party time (no paint):

When the eyes catch the light, you will see iridescence on ones with paint, and a clear shine on those who have lost the coating :)
I hope this is helpful :)

Would gloss clear-coat restore the effect?
should be perma-moderated

ZeldaTheSwordsman : No. You won't bring back any iridescence by just adding a clear top coat, it doesn't make sense. You would need a specific iridescent paint. Your gloss clear coat would juste make them shiny, glossy, but not iridescent.

They have the same iridescence as flutter wings - that special rainbow effect where the colours seem to change depending on the angle of light.

Swarovski crystal rhinestone chatons have a special name for this effect: "Aurora Borealis", shortened to "AB".

You can buy the larger sized stones as a comparison - I forget what stone size, perhaps somewhere between 35ss and 47ss (I would need to measure accurately to be sure) - but then to physically put the pointed-back stones into the eye sockets would be tricky (removal of the old eyes etc). Maybe one day I will attempt it on a baity TE but for now I just leave the eyes as-is.

I have yet to find a craft paint that faithfully achieves this AB effect- some nail varnishes have come close, however, I would not want to use (unstable) nail varnish on a beloved pony!

Haha yes that zombie look when the coating rubs off and the eye glows - it reminds me of the bit in Dark Crystal when the Podlings sit in that essence-extractor and look into the red light - their eyes go all creepy...  :scared:

I wanna chime in! Speedy and Party Time don't have any sparkle in their eyes really but Gingie does so this is my contribution! Her eyes are 99% of the reason I picked that listing

I'm in the middle of doing an experiment with different nail polishes and application techniques. I used a clear nail polish to fill in scratches and scrapes on badly damaged Twinkle Eyes, and am trying some various polishes and even an applique that I found at the craft store. We'll see how it goes!

Nail polish isn't a good choice.  It goes tacky and yellow over time, it was never intended as a permanent paint.  I remember doing some research into how iridescent plastic is made years ago, but it was an industrial process and not suitable for reproduction at home.  Paints don't really have the same look because they use broken up bits of pigment rather than a smooth single coating.
