Origin of my Gusty
« on: November 09, 2017, 09:02:12 PM »
Good morning,

I tried to send a PM, but it doesn't allow me to, so I hope I'm posting this under the correct topic???

I am curious about the origin of my Gusty... According to My Little Wiki she's a Scandinavian/Australian Gusty because she has lime green eyes and glitter symbols. Or could she be a South African variant?

At the bottom of her feet it says '84 Hasbro Pat Pend' and 'Hong Kong'.

Photobucket doesn't allow 3rd party linking anymore. You will have to upload your photo to a different site and link from there.

I can tell you one thing: she isn't South African! (Well, at least not made there...)

:)

It hardly surprises me that you own this variation of Gusty and that you live in South Africa. There are three possible reasons why you have her.

1. She was gifted to you by a relative who lived in Scandinavia or you visited there as a child.

2. You acquired her second hand from someone who got her from Scandinavia.

3. Scandinavia Gusty was sold in South Africa along with the rest of the My Little Pony/Pony Friends set from 1987.

I think you would have most likely have mentioned if she was either gifted to you or you got her on holiday, so I think it's the third option!

I think it's most likely you got her in your native, home country of South Africa :)

South Africa has a received a real mix of ponies as part of their releases ^.^ This includes the set which was sold in Scandinavia and includes Truly and Cupcake in :)

I hope this helps.

Wonderful

I thought it would be option number 3, but ponies do turn up in peoples collections for various reasons

I have US Powder in my childhood herd as she was a gift from my cousins who lived in LA ^.^

South Africa got a very hodge-podge selection of ponies, much like Australia, so I'm not surprised that Scandi Gusty is found there. I actually think that we will never really know what ponies were sold in either region, because it's such a mixture, even more so for South Africa, because you guys had ponies made there, too! So there's SA ponies, UK ponies, US ponies, and most likely Scandinavian ponies too.

Congrats on Scandi Gusty!

Indeed, I have noticed there seems to be some sort of a parallel between South Africa and Australia pony releases.  I wonder if the Alternate Birthflowers ever turn up in South Africa? I'm totally speculating here!

Prima Toys was the main distributor of ponies in South Africa in the 80s.

Sorry, I missed this Livia! Came across it while looking for another thread...

Yes I believe we did receive Scandinavian ponies here as I have bought both Truly and Cupcake locally, and been gifted another Truly as well. In addition there is yet another Truly up for sale on a local site. So this all cannot be a coincidence. We also have a fair number of Italian ponies to be found in the mix  :)

I have never seen an alternate birthflower pony here yet, only a regular release one. However I have a suspicion that this seller imported this lot of ponies. I could be wrong; this is only a theory of mine.
