Removing Smells from Thread / Thread Skein Storage
« on: November 08, 2017, 08:05:34 AM »
So, I took up cross-stitching again recently and finished a couple of pieces. I'm working on a big important piece and I store most of my thread in a cheap, poundshop toolbox that's actually the perfect size for my thread, has two flaps on the lid to store the needles, and has a handle.

Problem? It came smelling strongly of something, so I poured in boiling water and blossom-scented Flash cleaner to try and get rid of it, aired it out, then put my cheap threads in.

The threads now smell, surprise surprise, of blossoms and a bit chemically. The box no longer smells of anything I can detect, so I think the threads have absorbed it all. Does anyone have any tips on getting that smell out? I don't want it to damage the threads in some way .... most of the thread is the cheap stuff but I have some good metallics (which I HATE trying to split to work with  I will not be seduced again!) and lovely purples I bought for myself. The important threads for my project are not stored as I need them on hand.

I want to find a nicer way to store my skeins, but most storage or sewing boxes are made for floss or spools. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? I am partial to getting some perspex clear cosmetics draws for the moment, if they are long enough to keep my skeins flat and not folded.

Can you put a box of Baking Soda in with it?  That might help.

I think I'll need to get to get a big tub, put the thread in it, and put a small pot of the baking soda in with it since the original box is really small

Maybe some of those silica packets, or unscented dryer sheets.
Or just open it up and leave it outside for a day (in the shade so nothing fades).

I know it's winter, but fresh air makes a great difference!
