Otherwise, here's a list of search hits for restore my little pony on YouTube ^^ I haven't watched all of them myself though, so if there are questionable methods somewhere I apologise. Try to be careful with acetone, especially around eyes and symbols, and don't submerge your ponies in water. If you take their heads off to clean their insides, please let them air dry, head still off, for at least 24h! (in case any of the videos suggest otherwise)

Good advice I agree.  Also, completely avoid any products containing bleach (sodium hypochlorite). I avoid oxy clean (vanish oxy action etc) and dish soap as well.

What do you suggest instead of dish soap? I've always just used Dawn but if there's something safer I'm definitely interested!

Bleach and Oxy are definitely to be avoided, but I have yet to hear of a problem with plain ol' dish soap.  It's been my go-to for initial pony cleaning for 20+ years.  Unless you mean dishWASHER soap, which shouldn't be used on ponies!

in the museum we were told to avoid detergents like fairy liquid on plastics.  I don't think the issue with this is as obvious as the problem with bleach but to be on the safe side I use a milder detergent like shower gel if necessary, but usually just baby wipes.
