Seashell has a blue eye?
« on: September 26, 2017, 07:59:49 AM »
Hi All!

So earlier this year I won Seashell on e(vil)Bay. She didn't cost very much as she had really faded but I wanted her in order to pinch her tail for a friend who has a childhood Seashell in good condition but missing her tail. As I would have to restore Faded Seashell I figured it wouldn't matter that she had a replacement tail.

She came to me by rather a circuitous route: originally sent to the cousin of my Aunt (who was visiting England shortly afterwards), brought to Cape Town, South Africa and then flown up to Johannesburg this previous weekend when my Aunt and Uncle came to visit us here. So I had not seen Seashell 'in person' as such until Sunday.

This was when I noticed that her left eye is blue instead of the green it should be. She is the HK version of Seashell, and I cannot find anything where it mentions HK Seashell having blue eyes - or in her case, one blue eye. Can anyone shed some light on this? Any thoughts?

A close-up of her head: She has the blaze that you would expect

Here she is next to my other Seashell - you can see the difference in eye colour. It doesn't look faded though.

Well, that's just odd!   I would probably chalk it up to a factory error, since the other eye is green.

I would imagine it's strongly faded, considering how faded the whole pony looks in those pictures.  Pigments in the red/blue spectrum fade quickly, especially purple.
If the pony was left outside on one side in the garden for a few days, I can see how it would have faded.

I would agree with that, except I've never seen green paint fade to a different color like that. If the eye were purple, I would say definite fading.   But the mix of blue and yellow paint.... I don't know that the yellow would fade, and if it did, that it would leave such a brilliant blue.

Her head looks VERY faded in the second picture, and yellow is usually the first colour to go. So when you have green, blue is what you get when the yellow pigment has faded. I think that's what happened here. :)

Agreed, green paint can definitely fade to blue.  We painted an outer door on a building a dark green a few years ago.  It gets direct sunlight for much of the day and while it hasn't quite reached the pure blue stage, it is starting to look far more blue than green now.

NightGlider, is the other side of her head faded to that degree too? The side with the green eye?

I would think if both sides were exposed to fading, the other eye would look at least slightly bluer than a normal Seashell. Does that green eye color match the unfaded Seashell's eyes, or is it showing any signs of going blue?  I've just personally never seen green pony paint going blue. Yellow tends pretty strong against fading.  Pink is the really sensitive pigment, which is where you get orange/pinks/reds fading to yellow or white, purples fading to blue. In this case, even the blue pigment has faded from the head, leaving a yellowed vinyl.  This one almost looks like Bubble's head  :P

Hi ashlyne,

While her other eye cannot be said to be blue, it is definitely not quite as bright a green as my unfaded Seashell's eyes - more a dull green. And yes her head is really badly faded, poor girl!

What about the hair? It seems to be bluer than green.

That is also because of the severe fading.

Red is actually the first pigment to fade, then yellow.

Not a variant, this is just sun damage.  Seashell is already prone to it, and the evidence of massive sun exposure in her head/hair fading is obvious.  I'd be hugely surprised if her eyes /hadn't/ changed colour.  Blue is the last pigment to go from UV.

She spent way to much time at the beach, lol. I do agree with sunfading. You'd be amazed what happens to ponies when left unattended too long in certain areas where the sun has more strength.
