G4 My little pony skin is oily
« on: July 29, 2017, 06:04:10 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know why a My Little Pony's skin is oily? I bought a G4 pony today and her skin and hair is so oily! Does anyone know how to fix oily hair and skin? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I haven't seen any case of a G4's body being greasy (if you're talking about pearlized ones, they just feel different because of the different plastic), but greasy hair is pretty common in G4.5 ponies and pearlized G4s. To fix the hair, you've just got to wash their hair with conditioner and it should get rid of most of it.

Yeah, because Hasbro has decided to say screw quality.

It's a bagged Lily blossom. I guess I'll just leave her alone! At least she's shiny. :)

I don't own many G4s and I don't think I've added any recent ones to my collection really... but from everything I heard they can be nasty right out of the bag/box and need to have pony spa days.

Try regular ol' dish soap (I use Dawn), follow it up with some conditioner for the hair.
Generally takes care of anything oily, from mould release to grubby kid paw-prints.

After years of collecting G4's, I can truly say that quality has gone downhill hard. Like, hard hard. Like if a boulder hit a concrete floor hard.

My main complain with them though (besides the newer molds) is the head and hair quality. The body plastic hasn't really changed much, but the head plastic quality used to be so nice, matte, and DIDN'T feel cheap. The hair quality was at it's prime back in 2010-2013 but now hasbro has decided to be cheap (especially with the tails (they get super frizzy))

Basically, it's normal to expect bad quality from hasbro nowadays, and it's quite a shame!

also I don't know if i can link other things here, but I made a video about "How To Fix Frizzy Pony Hair" (link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjiLO7LYjGY )

Thanks!

Lots and lots of conditioner will help the greasy hair. For the body, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or Dawn Dish soap should do the trick.

Is she a single from a Target checkout line? I find that sometimes those can be more oily than a regular brushable. If you aren't sure, they don't have any variation of color in the colored part of their eye, so it just has one color, not a darker and a lighter color like normal releases. Dish soap should do the trick for hair and body, like others here have said :)

I have a pearlized Starlight Glimmer who is super oily feeling so I share your concern. I would recommend using dish soap with gloves! By the way,  does anyone know if this is just from the type of plastic, or some weird chemical coating and/or chemical breakdown occurring in the newer ponies?

i noticed that my pearly g4s had oily skin also (in addition to hair), but since the pearlies i have not had any oily-skinned ponies. mayhaps it is a different kind of plastic, as beatlespkmfan mentioned earlier. but i have noticed that the oily HAIR has moved past the pearlies and into the regular releases as well. it seems like all the single pack brushables are as cheap as possible, which is really a let down. the ponies i buy in box sets tend to be of "nicer" quality. ie no greasy hair.

Hasbro QC:

G1s were expected to be played with for 5-10 years after purchase.
G2s were expected to be played with for 5-8 years after purchase.
G3s were expected to be played with for 3-5 years after purchase.
G4s are expected to be played with for 1-3 years after purchase.

TOTALLY my opinion but it's how I see it.  By the time kids are in grade school they are already striving to be like their peers and own as many gadgets as possible.  Even the digital pets have a short shelf life.... Zhu Zhu anyone?  Neopets?  ;)  Tamagotchi?  :0

It's only gotten more prolific as we have more and more digital stuff - material items are going through a minimalist phase.   Hasbro has even tried to switch us over to blindbags rather than a G1 style of MLP to conserve their costs.  *sigh*  All the toys are smaller these days...
