What is the best way to store the more expensive pony's?
« on: July 27, 2017, 05:48:53 AM »
Ok, it might be a simple question and answer, but I still want to ask.... what is the best way to store expensive pony's? The temperature etc is not an issue over here, but just simply the thing you put the pony in. I've got them in a box with each pony in a small plastic bag and not too many together. Or is it better to store each pony in its own box? And with tissue surrounding it or not (I haven't got that at the moment). And standing or laying?

And what do you do with the BBE pony's or piggy's? How do you preserve the eyelashes the best possible?

Just hoping to learn from experiences of other collectors  .

I have my rare uk variants bagged separately in a box. Been there for 10 years with no issues.
My piggies are in the mix as well.

I have some of my more expensive ponies wrapped in archival tissue paper, then placed in an unsealed bag, and placed in a bin.  I think it's just safer than just putting them in a plastic bag.  Some of the Nirvanas in particular can start with that sticky thing, and the tissue paper handles that really well.  I think keeping the plastic of the bag from touching the plastic of the pony also helps minimize the plasticizer leaking issue.

I have thought about using tissue but in case of plasticizer leakage that would stick to the pony and maybe do more harm than good?

It's been my experience that plasticizer sticks to plastic best, so it really sticks to plastic bags.  It does not seem to stick to my tissue paper, but I invested in the archival stuff, not the stuff you get at the store in the wrapping paper section. I have several badly leaking ponies and sea pony floats wrapped up in the paper.  If anything, it helps absorb the stickiness.

What do you use for wrapping? Do you have a brandname and maybe pictures? Maybe I can find it over here as well.

Acid Free Or Archival Tissue Paper (same thing different name) is the best thing as goddessofpeep has said.

I bought this one from amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Kreinik-Sheets-Tissue-Paper-30-Inch/dp/B002JPYEJ2/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1501251709&sr=8-10&keywords=archival+tissue+paper

But really anything should be fine as long as it acid free (and color dye free). If the plasticiser leaks out the tissue paper won't really stick but maybe just get wet. It's better than the plastic bags because those chemicals may interact with the pony plastic more. In tissue paper in a bag isn't a bad idea.

There is actually a difference between acid-free and archival. Acid free papers tend to be treated to make the acidity neutral. This treatment can wear off over time and isn't as good as an archival paper for long-term use, or in this case, storage.
So it's a subtle difference, but there IS a difference. Archival is always better, but acid-free works just as well if you're only going to be storing for like, a couple of years. If you're talking about putting them into storage for a long long while, i would invest in the archival stuff like Foxtale linked to.
(Sorry. I work in a job that handles artwork and preservation techniques, so I tend to get a little nitpicky when it comes to terms like that. )

I buy my paper off of ebay most of the time.  Just search "archival tissue paper". There usually multiple sellers to choose from.  Archival products are a bit of a specialty market, but there are many stores, both online and brick and mortar, that sell a wide selection of items including archival boxes and specialty bags if you want to try that out as well.  Ebay is usually cheaper than the specialty stores, but not always.  I usually get 30 sheets for about $10, but they're big sheets and each is good for multiple ponies.

Under lock and key and guarded by armed mercenaries-I mean, uh I agree with goddessofpeep and Foxtail. I never knew there was such a thing. Sounds like a great investment.
