Cartoons with Lineless Art/Animation?
« on: July 11, 2017, 09:27:58 PM »
I watch a lot of cartoons with my partner, and the other day we saw Tangled: Before Ever After and were talking about how nice the lineless art is.

Which got me thinking, what other shows don't use outlines? I know MLP uses colored outlines, and a lot of shows use black outlines.

Anyone know of any?

And what style do you prefer?

kestral_kitsune, that's fair! I've heard of plenty of people who also didn't like the art style.

Lineless isn't as popular... it was starting to become more popular with the advent of computers to render animation, but then trends switched back to using lines again.

Some of the earlier Disney movies don't have outlines so much - well, they do, but the lines are colored to match the drawings.  Then they started doing animation with the thick heavy linework (101 Dalmations, Robin Hood, etc).  Then they went back to less linework...

I'm trying to think of some other shows that use it but for some reason I am not coming up with anything.  :(  You do see it quite a bit in commercials still.

lovesbabysquirmy, thanks for the input! I didn't even think about animated movies, my mind was on TV shows. I'll have to start paying more attention to the animation in the Disney movies. I know the 3D Disney movies don't use lines, but haven't really paid attention to the earlier ones.

Have you seen Song of the Sea? From what I remember it's pretty lineless - and also drop dead gorgeous and haunting.

Shimmer and Shine uses lineless vector animation with shading and it looks next-gen.

Look up Skyland (a quick  google search of 'skyland tv show' will bring it up.  I remember watching it on teletoon when it originally aired).  Its an amazing story with a really neat graphic style.

The only think I do not like is the animation, the characters movement look like paper dolls. They donĀ“t seem natural.

Everything Mary Blair has illustrated! I love lineless because it reminds me of her work.

As for animation, what comes to my mind right now is Cartoon Network:
-Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (partially lineless)
-Samurai Jack

Ruby Gloom!

Although, I think that textured paper-cut out look you're referring to is very much Disney's, I don't think I've seen it anywhere else, and they tend to use it more frequently on their Pixar merchandise.

I cant think of many cartoons, but for movies most of the ones by the studio who did Song of the Sea (Book of Kells too)

And then I guess many Anime series have characters without outlines/line art, but I'm not sure its considered to be the same genre :)

I think the reason for linework vs non-line work, is maybe it helps distinguish the characters from the backgrounds in traditional animation. But I'm not sure why there isn't more of it out there

I believe South Park doesn't use lines.
