Help me ID this book series?

Hi guys! My fella is trying to find a particular book series, I don't have much info at all but I know some of you have unreal skills in this department! Any help much appreciated!

Here is what I know:
-female lead is thrust into a magical world
-world consists of 4 different areas w different environment
-heroine befriends a male helper
-there is a tournament or series of tasks
-the prize is a granted wish
-pre 2010

Hmm, maybe The Wish Granter by C. J. Redwine? Probably not, though, because that's a more recent book. Does he remember any key scenes or any details that stuck out to him, and anything about the author?

Is the heroine a teenager or an adult? I'm quite good with YA novels, so maybe I'll come up with something if I hear a bit more about it.

I can't say that one sounds familiar but a female lead wizard series I do love is the So You Want To Be a Wizard? Series by Diane Duane. I'd also look into Diana Wynne Jones since she wrote so many magic based stories for YA as a possibility

I was also thinking it sounded like something Diana Wynne Jones would have written.  I just became a big fan of hers so I've been reading a whole bunch of her stuff lately.  I haven't read a book with the plot of this one yet, but I would not be at all surprised if it was a Diana Wynne Jones book.

it sounds a lot like Caraval by stephanie garber. At least so far, I haven't finished it.. HOWEVER, pretty sure that's not it since it was released this year lol

The book you describe sounds familiar >.< but those bullet points seem to be a trend with YA books. x.x Good luck with the hunt!
