If you put something on the internet, it will get stolen

Just because you're a professional bakery doesn't mean you can't download free fanart from the internet for use on cakes, right?

Edit: To be clear, CakeWrecks.com is a site that makes fun of professional bakery cakes, they are not the ones who did the thieving.

This is the exact reason why I always watermark my work

Yep, that's the risk you've got to take. Not sure what else to say.

A lot of my designs have appeared now on Amazon and sites like Alibaba, all ripped from Teepublic. :/

I've seen stolen images used on products without the watermark removed, just shameful.

Depending on the design/work in question it can also be really easy to remove a watermark :/

It looks like probably Caravel lets you provide an "image" that they will put on a cake.  Some poor person probably thought that this image would look nice on a cake for their MLP group or maybe a mlp birhtday.

I think they have paid for their crime, lol...

To avoid pictures stolen into a commercial use, it's important to add watermark AND never let a big version (more than 600x800) on the net, so even if it's used, it will get bitmapped when printed ;).

If you put something on the internet, it will get stolen.

9_9; I once had someone steal my ebay pictures for a pony ID site.

I had the opposite, years ago. People using my pony site pictures on auctions, back when UK ponies and such were fetching a lot of money. I think it was LM then actually who spotted it and alerted me because one of the images was Plush Honeycomb and at the time I think mine was the only one people knew about (it was a long time ago). It also isn't just artwork. I had the text of my old site stolen and copy-pasted onto someone else's ID site once, too. That's the reason there's the disclaimer about the Scrapbook being a free resource and not to be duplicated or used in any other kind of project without permission, because some unscrupulous people plagiarise other people's ID text as well as their imagery.

I put my website photos up now with that resignation though also the hope it won't happen again. I feel really bad for people whose artwork gets stolen though, and exploited. There isn't a lot that you can do about people saving pictures they like to look at on their own PCs or use as a phone background or a desktop image, but the idea that people steal stuff and then try and make money from it is wrong and more needs to be done to protect the creators.

I've seen websites use my ancient first bassoon photograph that I put on DeviantArt and Flickr to advertise their reeds.

It is a bit awkward, I wish they had asked or had credited me, but it's a different situation from the one in the OP, because they aren't really making money off of my photography and probably just thought it was some stock photo they found through Google.

Still... I wonder why it's always that particular photo and not the newer ones I have taken which are a hundred times better.
