Anyone knows what these are?
« on: May 01, 2017, 08:04:40 AM »
I have got these in my collection, and was hoping anyone could share some info on them, how they where distributed and such.

First off is Snuzzle. Looks like regular Snuzzla, but came in this box. At irst I thought maybe the Mail order varaints came like these, just that people selldom kept the boxes, even though the mailorder ponies is often seen MIP. But it says 1983 on the box, so I guess these where part of an earlier issue then the mail orders. Also I have seen a Moondancer MIP with the same box.  I think the seller mentioned something like a promotion send out to stores for advertising or likewise.

The other one is Applejack, MIB in box. (It has the horseshoe point sticker behind the holes) I guess it is something that could be ordered fom a catalogue or something? but from where?

Anyone know anything about these kind of boxed ponies, and maybe someone has pictures to share of other ponies in similar packaging it would be nice to see. :)

For AJ in the "originating store" section, it says JCP...makes me think JCPenneys. They always jad a big wish book at Christmas I believe.

I have a boxed Blue Belle; that is how they came if you ordered them from a department store catalog (JC Penny, Sears, Youngdales, etc.)

I can only assume it was done because a pony on a card could get damaged in the mail?

Those boxes are so cool!!!

I would have to agree, that is probably the packaging the ponies came in when ordered from one of the wishbooks. :D

Look at the label on Applejack - there's a pink part at the bottom - it says Montgomery Ward. I think that was a catalogue company. I have a 1985 catalogue, so a bit later than yours, with these pics

Yes, they are from the mail order catalogs. :)  One of the highlights of Christmas was receiving the "wishbooks" in the mail months ahead of time!

I know the following department stores had wishbooks:

Sears
JC Penney's
Montgomery Wards

There might have been other ones, but those are the 'major' ones I remember.  They had big sections full of the most popular toys, which of course included MLP!

The "proper" mail order ponies (like, ordered from brochures included with MLPs) did not come in boxes, just the baggies.  As far as I know only "catalog" ponies came with the decorative boxes.

BTW Blue Belle, Snuzzle, etc were sold from 1983 to 1984.  1982 is just when the mold was made.  All the molds are a year "behind" like that.
