Pics of/advice for customs with dragon/demon wings?
« on: March 26, 2017, 04:52:57 PM »
Hey guys! Long story short, my cover artist is having a heck of a time finding/making wings to fit a character I need on my cover (if we get the right bend, it's the wrong shape and vice versa), and so I'm thinking about biting the bullet and making the wings myself so I can photograph them for her and get things just right that way. HOWEVER. I've never made any good quality dragon/demon type wings on a custom before. Can I see pics for inspiration? Any suggestions of what material to use for the webbing/membrane between the little finger things?

Have you tried looking at Bat wings?  They might work.

The problem we're running into is that we're having a heck of a time (literally been searching for a month and a half now) for images we can buy the rights to that have the wings shot from *behind* (so they fold forward). The few that we have been able to find aren't the right shape--sort of chunky instead of sweeping and long. I know it'd be easier to draw them (we've tried the commissioned artist route, but so far, they're kind of just making whatever wings they want without regard to my vision, or they won't sign over royalty-free rights--and yes, I'm more than willing to pay them to do so ;) ) but my drawing skills aren't nearly up-to-snuff for that. Now, pony customizing? I can handle that :) So I thought I'd start here :)

you can use wire and/or wire mesh as a skeleton if you want

I'd recommend looking in D&D dragon art books

you can use sculpey if you don't mind baking...and look on you tube for tutorials

what do you mean by this? perhaps the artists you are commissioning are having trouble understanding what pose you mean? :o i know i am..im not sure how to picture this!

I did a quick Google search to try and picture the pose your describing, are you talking about wings that are curled up as if around a figure and photographed from behind? I found this image... Is this similar to what you're trying to find?

This may be completely wrong though. Plus i have no idea who to credit for the ref image because Pinterest is a pain to navigate on my phone.

I don't know if this'll work but I did these wings a few years ago. (It's hard for me to share photos when I'm not at my computer... ^^;)

I don't think that's quite the pose you're looking for but it's the style of wings you need?

Here are a few examples of my wings, the first are made out of acetate with gold leaf sandwiched in between to produce the reflective gold you see.  The next are wings made out of Apoxie Sculpt :)

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a woman in possession of disposable income, must be in want of a pony.

I've tried making dragon/bat wings using wire, apoxie sculpt, and clear plastic before. Alas, the plastic doesn't take paint. :( Cloth didn't work very well, either, though that could also be an option.

liquid latex is a beautiful medium! akamerukawaii makes some awesome doll stuff using it, like mermaid tails and wings and fins..etc. i had never considered using it on dolls until i watched her cannel x)

If you have wings of the right shape and want to bend them, made from typical plastics like g4 ponies for example, you can bend those wings by dunking them in boiling water and securing them in place while they cool. Ive done this successfully, you secure them a tiny bit more bent than you want them because they will return a little bit towards the original shape. Then they'll stay there permanently and you can heat and rebend them again if you wish to.

Well, having looked for liquid latex at Michael's, Blick's, and Hobby Lobby, I'm apparently looking in all the wrong kind of store. A googles search tells me it's considered a make-up product, as the horror industry uses it to make fake scars. Where should I be able to find it?

Party City. Go figure.
