My Little Pony (Childhood) Collection

G1 Collection

My first brushable ponies were two fakies: a light blue mare with rainbow-coloured hair and a yellow foal with tiny red stars and a translucent body that glowed in the dark. I received them from my parents during a summer holiday when I was seven years old. I remember disliking the poor quality and overall design of the fakies and wishing for a real MLP toy. The first MLP that I received was (Italy) Posey. I played with MLP toys for about two years. In the end, my collection consisted of six ponies: (Italy) Posey, Bow Tie, Applejack, (German) Baby Cherries Jubilee, Baby Foamy and Stripes. When I was nine, my best friend and I began taking riding lessons, and real horses became far more interesting than toy ponies. Nevertheless, I have always cherished my childhood ponies, and I have never parted with them.

In 2008, while I was browsing the World Wide Web, I chanced across the MLP Arena and with it across numerous MLP reference sites. I was excited to learn that there existed a huge base of collectors, many of them people of my age who had played with MLP when they were children. I was fascinated by the multitude of MLP that had been released during the 80s and 90s. It was the first time that I saw pictures of ponies that I had admired in brochures when I was a child and that had never been available in local stores: Summer Wing Ponies, Princess Ponies .... I was enchanted! My love for MLP toys was rekindled, and I began collecting Summer Wing Ponies and Windy Wing Ponies. Ten years later, Wingers are still my favourite sets of ponies. My remaining goals for my G1 collection can be summed up as follows:

I am focusing on obtaining the following sets in near mint to mint condition:
  • Summer Wing Ponies
  • Windy Wing Ponies ✓
  • Playtime Baby Brother Ponies ✓
  • Sweetheart Sister Ponies ✓
  • Teeny Tiny Ponies
  • Teeny Tiny Twin Ponies
  • Newborn Twin Ponies
  • Baby-Blossom-Pose Ponies
In addition, I am collecting the following brushes and combs:
  • flower picks with coloured centres
  • flower picks with plain centres
  • fish combs
  • duck combs
  • flower brushes

G4 Collection

Between 2010 and 2012 I was busy with graduation and starting my PhD. When I returned to the world of MLP in 2013, there was a new MLP Arena and a new generation of ponies. What a surprise! Initially, G4 failed to spark my interest, because it was so different from G1 and G3. However, when I spotted a tinsel-maned Ploomette at a local store, I was hooked. Being able to actively buy and collect an entire range of new ponies was exciting. Moreover, I had fallen in love with the G4 animal friends and the small playsets that catered to them. My G4 enthusiasm reached a dangerous low with the Rainbow Power and Cutie Mark Magic lines of 2014 and 2015 which I thought uninspired and ugly. My interest in G4 brushables was rekindled by the pearlised brushables in 2016. Sadly, it was just as quickly dimmed again by the reboot of the series in 2017. Between 2018 and 2021 I sold all of my G4 collection except for my favourite animal friends which I am going to keep.

Other (Childhood) Collections

Sandylion Stickers

Like most children in Germany in the late 80s and early 90s, I had a sticker collection that I would keep in a few precious sticker albums. We would carry our sticker albums with us during school breaks and swap stickers with our classmates. The majority of stickers were produced by Sandylion. There were fuzzy, pearly, prismatic/glittery, mylar, glow-in-the-dark and kromekote stickers. The stickers were available on small individual sheets of 5 cm x 5 cm. The sticker albums were booklets with blank pages that we could add stickers to and remove from again. The stickers remained reusable after removal from the pages.

I still own one of my childhood albums with some of my favourite childhood stickers. Sadly, many of the stickers have suffered some wear and tear over the past 25 years. When I realised that vintage sticker sheets by Sandylion were still easily obtainable via ebay, etsy and the like, I decided to rebuild my childhood collection on mint sticker sheets. My childhood collection is now once more complete, however, I am still looking for stickers produced by Sandylion. There are loads of stickers that I had never seen as a child, because our local store carried only a small selection of stickers. Unfortunately, many international sellers will either not ship to Germany or use the Global Shipping Program with exorbitant shipping charges. Thus, I am always happy to receive missing sticker sheets as extras in swap boxes from swap partners around the world.

My childhood sticker album, and my box of mint sticker sheets.
The box is small, but don't let your eyes fool you, it already contains more than 300 sticker sheets!

Types of Sandylion stickers that I collect: pearly, prismatic/gittery, glow-in-the-dark, fuzzy.
Most stickers are on white backing, some stickers are on brown backing.

Individual sheets of 5 cm x 5 cm have a value of about $1 to $3. (Rare sticker sheets may have a value of up to $30, but I haven't included any rare sheets in my wishlist.)

I keep the sticker sheets in transparent plastic sleeves to protect them. The fuzzy sheets will stain the other sheets if left entirely unprotected. Dear swap partner, always wrap fuzzy sheets in a piece of paper or slip them inside a plastic sleeve, before you send them to me!

Lady Lovely Locks Pixietails

When I was a child, I owned a handful of Pixietails from Lady Lovely Locks that I loved to pieces. Pixietails are little creatures that have the bodies of various animals (bunnies, birds, chipmunks, mice, seahorses, fish, turtles, snails and butterflies) and long tails. They come in all colours of the rainbow. Their bodies are about the same size, although the length of their tails may differ. Some Pixietails have curly tails, some have smooth tails, and some have both straight and curly strands in their tails. There are about 70 different Pixietails. However, no duplicate will look exactly like the other, because their multicoloured tails will differ subtly.

About two years ago, I began collecting any and all Pixietails. I am always thrilled to receive Pixietails in swap boxes, no matter whether they are missing variants or duplicates of ones that I already own. Many Pixietails for sale second hand look like a horrible mess of hair. However, Pixietail hair is even easier to restore than My Little Pony hair, and so far I have been able to restore even the worst frizzballs to near mint condition.

I always try to restore the Pixietails that I receive to their original style:
straight, curly or super-curly.

For now I am keeping my Pixietails in transparent plastic bags in a small storage box.
Eventually I would like to display them in transparent plastic boxes on a shelf.

In addition to the Pixietails themselves, I also collect Pixietail-shaped combs.
