Odd Baby Starbow and Princess wand question
« on: March 16, 2017, 01:23:59 PM »
Hello all,

I have a question about Baby Starbow. Apart from the US and Euro versions I already had, I recieved another baby Starbow from German Ebay which has an odd hair colour. It is neither blue, nor purple (which it would normally have been if bought from Germany), but like faded blue with pink hairs in it. Could it be it is just -very- faded so that some hairs became lighter and others faded to pink? Or could it be they ran out of purple hair and tried a substitute mix of two colours? Here she is, along with the other two in comparison (open spoiler):

The other question is about blue princess wands. I have several of these, and one (from the US, I think) is a true dark blue while others are a little lighter with a yellowish/turquoise hue. Common yellowing? Explanations, anyone?

Thank you in advance!

Just to add to the confusion I spy that Baby Starbow with the purple stripe has a different shade of pink in her mane compared to the other two

Here is what Taffeta's website has to say about the blue vs. purple stripes

That is interesting, thank you!
I did notice that her blue/pink coloured mane section has some wave to it and the hair on that section has a latter quality than the rest of her mane. I wonder if she could be a very faded purple version then? I've had other purple hair versions before but this one is different, haven't seen this kind of low quality hair on any before, nor did I see that weird colour. Will check back for the reddish streaks of all three in daylight, too. :)

Oh! You've made me think! It was the cheap hair comment :P

I've noticed that some of the Precious Pocket ponies have cheaper hair that frizzles more easily and is a different texture compared to regular nylon.

I wonder if they used that type of hair on your Baby Starbow?

That's true, I know what you're talking about. Her hair indeed has similarities to that Pocket ponies' hair.

Most all the ponies from that year have some weird hair stuff going on. I don't know what the answer is regarding the German baby, but the hair quality issue and the fact multiple versions exist of pretty much all these ponies is for sure.

It may be a batch thing. I'm thinking of all the different versions of Baby Mischief and how many of those came out of Germany...I haven't done comparisons with continental rainbow babies, only ones from the UK and the US, but it's not impossible there are more minor variations in there, especially coming from that production year.

She's cute anyway :)

Thank you for replying Taffeta

I had a look at my Baby Starbow and she is the purple stripe version. I am pretty sure I have had a blue stripe version through my hands, but it was some time ago so I can't remember quite what the texture of her hair was like.

The symbols look a little lighter in color too.

Thank you Taffeta, will keep that in mind and have an eye on others of that year then as well.  :)

Yes Kasin, you are right, I noticed that, too. Will definately keep her as an oddity.

There are definitely at least 2 versions of all 4 Rainbow Babies and the symbol colours are slightly different between the silkier haired ones and the rougher haired ones as a rule, as are the shades of colour in the hair. Not just Starbow. But what I am not clear on is how many others there might be that have one characteristic from one type of pony and one from another. Baby Mischief is a little earlier time release wise but I have six versions of her, so it is possible for that to happen. Dazzleglow is from the right year and there are at least three versions of her, possibly four because of body/symbol/hair variation. I think this is probably the tip of the Rainbow Baby iceberg...

I feel confused now, did you really mean Dazzleglow? As we were talking about Rainbow Babies right before

Yes, I meant Dazzleglow, because she's an example of another pony from that same release year with multiple variations in the quality of her hair and the colouring of her body and symbol. Why would that be strange? O.o. Someone else mentioned Pocket Friends ponies (linking from my site, in fact) so I'm confused as to why referencing Dazzleglow would be odd in context??

I see, I guess I simply wasn't aware that there were any variations to her except the hearts colour inside her body material. Could you perhaps tell more about the kind of variations to her? As I love the GITD ponies but completed the set very early when I wasn't paying attention to such little differences yet. :)

I didn't realize there were such variations on the Rainbow Babies. My only information is the one in the middle comparison shot with the light symbol looks exactly like my childhood one which was purchased in New York in the USA at the end of the pony line.
