Not sure if it's changed since the 80's, but Care Bears were pretty gender-neutral for their time. They had a good mix of girl/boy characters (though some are rather stereotypical) and at least in the younger demographic during my childhood, equally enjoyed by all kids. Even if a toy isn't marketed that way, designating one kind of toy for only some kids is silly.
When my nieces were little they were introduced to all things Star Wars by my DH. They loved him, so they really loved his toy collection as well. They are all girls.
