Help me to find out who those ponies are
« on: January 14, 2017, 02:48:15 AM »
My friend from Riga gave me a link to some ponies and I can't find who they are
Is this a regular Pinwheel or some variant?

I think the G1 in your middle spoiler may be Buttons

Agreed.  Just out of interest why did you thing Pinwheel was a variant?  Are her symbols glittery? Maybe she has some glitter or paint loss.  Sometimes ponies discolour to a different shade or get extensive regrind that makes them appear different.

She kind of looked different from the wiki photos. My country and many countries that are close to mine didn't get worldwide sold G1 ponies, we usually have them from neighbor countries. Sometimes it's people who got their ponies while traveling.
I guess I'll have to buy them to find out, they're pretty cheap x3

Buttons is correctly a "Movie Star" pony. NSS is a collector label invented in the 1990s but it's not a very complementary one :)

The Buttons you have was sold in Europe predominately. The symbol is buttons and stars. The UK has two versions, that one and one with big buttons but continental Europe seems to have buttons and stars only. The UK didn't get Pinwheel, so if they came in together, they probably didn't come from here.

The fact you have Pinwheel too suggests maybe they came to Latvia (I think I read you right, that the ponies are in Riga, not where you are?) from Scandinavia as I am PRETTY sure that Scandinavia had both regular Pinwheel and buttons and star symbol Buttons. (Holland are also contenders, but more geographically distant!) My chief suspect would be Finland but I might be wrong. I know there are a lot of boats between Scandinavia and the Baltic states; I've seen some of them in Helsinki.

She looks like a normal Pinwheel to me. A friend I know in the Netherlands has noted slight variations on symbols between some versions of those ponies based on MOC ones she has in her collection. Maybe that's why she looks different - it's a different production batch from the year 3 US release. That would make sense as she would have hit Europe a year later than the US.

Ok, that was the geek reply ;) But I love working out where ponies come from.

Taffeta, I don't have them, that's why I made this thread - to find out if they're worth buying for the price seller wants for them. The problem is people want really crazy money for anything that was made before 2000 as it's a "vintage" thing. For example Buttons is sold for 30$.

Thanks for the info! It was very helpful and interesting to read :)

While we're at it - I've also found these. The seller says they're G2s from McDonald's and it's a complete set. He wants 50$ for them. Are they legit? Do they worth that much?

50 euro is waaaaaaaaay too much. Mc Donald's Ponies are not that rare or special.

Btw. I understand why you feel Pinwheel might be a variation. The Pinwheel on your picture looks like she has a white/blonde streak of hair in her mane. Regular or Italy Pinwheels don't have that. I am not a Nirvana expert. But am I right about the mane? Or am i just colour blind?

The mcD ponies are legit, but not worth 50 bucks. I've had loads of those over my years of collecting, and I used to send them as freebies to people in the US as they didn't get that set. I'm pretty sure we had them all over europe, so they're not at all rare here. They might fetch a higher price in the US, but not as much as 50$.

The white in Pinwheel's hair could be a faded pink streak, which *could* mean she could be a NC/spanish Pinwheel, as far as I can tell from pictures of NC pinwheel her hair looks to have a fading pink streak? Her eyeliner looks too light, however, to be a NC pony. My guess is it's a HK Pinwheel, but it'd be odd if that streak was faded as it's not the shade of pink that does fade easily.
It could tbh also just be the photo that washed it out. The lighting in it isn't the best.

NC = No Country :) Often when referring to a NC pony it'll be a spanish pony (as they often came without a land stamp), as the other ponies without land stamps (like Greece and some South American ponies) can be recognized for other features as well. :)
