Has G4 hair quality improved with the newer wave? (Coloratura, etc)

I'm a little late to the game as G4 ponies are no longer available in Japan, but has the hair quality improved between waves somewhat?  These are both directly out of package, and look at the difference!  Poor Starlight, I don't know what to do with her

As you can see, Coloratura's hair is gorgeous, while Starlight's hair is a hot mess.  Just wondering if hair quality has improved, or I just got a lucky pony

I miss the early days of G4 when they had curls straight off the card!

It was a lucky pony you got I think! I got Pretzel not long ago and she had the worst hair I've ever seen on a pony of any generation. I couldn't tame it with conditioner or straighteners so in the end I just wrapped it round her horn and sprayed it in place.

yes absolutely! i bought a pretzel from Walmart and a coloratura from TRU, about a month apart from eachother. coloratura's mane is so so silky and smooth! especialyl as opposed to pretzel, who was actually physically greasy? like her whole body had some sort of slime on it. and her hair is basically just thread. there must have been some sort of problem with the materials used to make wave 1..?

But YES! The G4s did used to come with beautiful curls.

The pearly Twilight Sparkle I have has the worst hair of any new pony I've ever seen in my entire life.  I might have to chop it off and rehair her.  Uneven, tangles, knots, glue, and just feels gross besides.  I think wave 1 pearlies like Coloratura have much nicer hair than wave 2, though.

With the pearly ponies, it's been hit or miss. My Coloratura and Pretzel were fine, but Rainbow Dash took some combing out.

Have you tried washing it? Sometimes it helps cause rerooting is such a pain.

Not sure, but the hair on my Shine Bright Luna and DD's Shine Bright Cadence are thick, soft and don't get tangled so easy.

No, my Coloratura hair was covered in glue.  So much of it that it has fused her hair together and I had to style the glue chunks into loose curls to hide it.  I had the same issue with the G3 ponies.

I had no issues with Coloratura or Starlight Glimmer from the pearly set 1, but Pretzel and Cherry Berry came off the card with not great hair and the greasy feel mentioned above. A wash and a shampoo later, though, and it's a lot improved. Not quite as good as Colo's, but decent enough to be going on with. I think it's hit and miss with G4.

Thank you for the replies everyone!  I guess I just got a lucky pony.  Starlight's hair feels a lot like others mentioned above, greasy, tangles, frizz, and an odd texture, sorta stringy.  I'll def try to wash hers, and I may have to try something else.  Anyone else tried to style her?  Coloratura does look great though!

Hit and miss for me too. My Coloratura has really nice hair, at least for her mane, but Starlight Glimmer from the same wave has a dry-ish frizzy tail. Differences between manes and tails seem to be pretty common for me with G4s. I got the styling size Power Ponies 6-pack recently and the manes are all pretty good, but some of the tails are not (Rarity's is the worst, it's thin, it's unmanageable and it's two different lengths (!!). It looks especially weird since so many of their manes have 3 rows of plugs so really really thick hair, and then this limp little tail in back.

I got the same two ponies recently! I saw the headband version of Starlight Glimmer in my search for Coloratura and thought she was cute. When I took her off her card her hair was crazy :/ I washed it with shampoo and conditioner as I do for any other pony and it's better but doesn't really "drape" right. Coloratura's hair, on the other hand, was very nice straight off the card. Maybe the blue hair is superior in quality to the other colors they used for the pearly ponies?

And yes -- I'm only a casual G4 collector so I only have a little bit of experience with this, but older secondhand G4 ponies and the one G4 I got new off the card (Sunset Shimmmer) have beautiful hair.

i don't think they have, most of my pearly's have terrable straw like wirier hair i can't do anything with except put some of them into a plat and other ones their manes have been sown so thick i can't even plat it
