It's suspended on brackets and not attached any other way so it does swing a bit. It's worked for a few years with only a few ponies falling when I forget to open the door slowly or bump into it but today was the last straw. It needs changing.

Amongst all the carnage there was one act of heroism :)

oh dear! xD
But that is actually a really cute display idea! What if you tied a rope across the front of each shelf about an inch up, to make a sort of rope fence? maybe that would keep them from free jumping all the time. :p

That's something I was thinking of doing but it wouldn't fix all the problems :P
The shelves aren't all level either :P some tilt back and others forward because it's hard to get the knots to be in exactly the right place. I think it also needs to be attached to the door at the bottom to stop it swinging.

Thats a shame u.u its super cute. I guess you could mount it on a wall, or someplace that it wouldn't get moved around much.

That's the only place it can go, unfortunately. I've got so little space in my room. It's the best way I could think of to make use of that tiny gap.

It's a really neat idea. But yes, I can see how attaching it to the bottom of the door would be necessary to prevent it swinging too madly.

what about running some thin copper or vinyl plumbing pipe between the shelves and threading the rope through that? it would make the unit more ridged so the individual shelves would level and not swing independently. should not cost too much either, could even spray paint them bright colors :)

Ok, I have to make it known I'm not laughing at your misfortunate event, but that last picture of the act of heroism really did make me smile, lol.
Everyone has some good ideas to help you keep this display, if you use any you'll have to show us!

Now that is a brilliant idea! There might even be some in the garage I can steal!

I know slyons - I though it was cute that she'd saved her friend from falling :) I'll definitely show you when it's back up *safely* lol

*edit - I've just found the perfect thing! I spotted some old shower curtain rails in the garage and they're a nice shiny silver :) I'm going to find the pipe cutter and see if I can adapt the shelves :)

I had a similar display for a while, but it was one of those over-the-door shoe holder things, it was all metal shelves and the ponies didn't fall because the shelves were more like baskets. I don't have a picture of it, of course...

It's a really good idea, though. Maybe through the use of Velcro Magic you could still make it work.
Or copper. Or anyone else's good idea!
Thanks so much to Calico_Star for her beautiful work on my Avatar!

yes - if you can find the ones that used to hold VHS tapes!  I put foamcore down as flooring and they worked just fine. :)  Except... don't let them rest against the painted metal.  It sticks and transfers sometimes in high temperatures.

Oh that sucks! At least you hopefully got a smile out of the heroism. That's so adorable.

I have this feeling every time I walk past my oldest displays. Those "quick solutions" can get really annoying after a while!

Try putting knots just above and below the shelves; that will trap the shelves in place; combined with True's suggestion the ponies should stay put. :) you'll have to tie the first knots, put the first shelf on, then tie the second knot so it fits snug against the shelf., then do the next shelf the same way...

Run another rope from the bottom edges of the shelves, under the door, and back up to tie onto the top rope.  Make sure it's nice and snug, that should stop the swinging, too. :) if its too narrow a space under the door, try fishing line!
