How many G1 ponies are there?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer so I apologize.
Someone asked me how many more ponies I would need to collect to have all of the G1s.
I didn't know what to tell them!

So as far as the US ponies, that includes mail orders and nothing like prototypes or anything that wouldn't be sold to people, how many are there?
And does anyone know an estimate on how many nirvana ponies there are? I'm sure new varieties show up every once in a while.

That's a lot of ponies.   I came up with

Year 1: 6 ponies

Year: 2: 21 ponies

Year 3: 40 ponies

Year 4:  56

Year 5: 71 (68 f you don't count the Soft and Sleepy Newborns)

Year 6: 76

Year: 7 86

Year 8: 31

Year 9: 37

Year 10: 30

Mail orders: 57

Playset ponies: 13 

That's 513 US ponies not including Dream Beauties, Petite Ponies etc..

Someone else probably has a better estimate than I do though.

It's pretty much impossible to count if you're including Nirvanas. Like, does Re Unicorno count as a variant of Majesty or as a pony in his own right? What does Applebelle count as? etc etc.

I think it is far more than 600, but would you count the variations of the same pony, look at Gusty (SS, NSS, EUROPEAN, American, Italian) so do you count duplicates in different format or not?
That gives me space for more ponies, hahaha

I almost think it's impossible to count, considering new ones show up every now and then. But I'd love to see a guestimate.

I go on eBay all the time and see ones that are new to me, especially with Greek and Argentinian ponies.

I think someone said there's close to 1,000 if you count Nirvanas and Country Exclusives, but dont count, plushies, petites and Dream Beauties.

I have had family members and friends ask me how many ponies there are total, and they often seem disappointed when I say I honestly don't know and I am not sure how to figure it out.

I was going to count the UK exclusives but I curren tly have a toddler using me as a climbing frame and can't concentrate! Also some UK ponies are classed as EU ponies, more confusion! If friends/family ask me I always say about a thousand too, that's got to be a good ballpark figure.
