So basically, there are two things here. I mean, you enjoy it. So that's fine. That's all that matters. What I think is irrelevant in that discussion, and I hope the 2nd season is also enjoyable.

For me as a historian I look at stuff like this with a mixture of horror and fascination as to how Japan sometimes portrays its historical figures. I mean, representations of historical figures are interesting to me anyway, but the reason this one leaves me cold is that as far as I can gather, the chosen past individuals are pulled in just to fight against the heroes, not because they have any deeper reason or anything to be there. And the Bakumatsu period is already full of plenty of warriors legitimately wanting to slash each other open. I don't have any issue with villain/hero alignments of any kind for Shinsengumi/Takasugi and Choushuu etc because they all are rooted in the story and therefore connect. But the others are just shoved in there as randomly plucked enemies outside of time as far as I can see. And I kind of don't like that, mediaeval Japan being made the cannon fodder of the nineteenth century.

I don't feel like there are any pieces of the actual characters, it's just a case of picking some currently popular historical folk to get attention. I'm cynical because right now Sanada Yukimura is the darling of the Sengoku publicity model - tons of merch all over Japan, and made prominent by Basara and Sengoku Musou. I did see that Benkei was another one...

But hey, it's an anime, and believe me, there have been weirder...still dealing with Nobunaga as a girl...and so on...so I guess it's probably fine. This is just my specialist area, so I'm going to twitch about it when I feel like the individuals I study are being pulled in like puppet fodder just to sell the game, rather than because of who they are.

I might have stuck with it and enjoyed it more if I didn't know who those fodder people were.

Also slightly concerned that Seimei is meant to reflect Abe no Seimei somehow. But maybe that was me overthinking.

It looks like the info about Hulu streaming the new Fruits Baskets was incorrect as Hulu told me today that they "didn't have any details at this time" if they would be streaming Fruits Basket soon.

I see episode 4 has been uploaded to Youtube but still no episode 3.

Actually, I though that as well. Although, I am not sure what an onmyōji has to do with the story, other then the character having mythical powers to sense/power the pocketwatch. I think he is supposed to be the older brother of the emperor.

Its intersting that we both seem to have similar intrests and studied similar subjects but have totally different points of view. If nothing else, we are both trained as historians (although I currently teach in China..not exactly the path I was going for but at least i'm in the right part of the world..sort of). Someday I will start my PH D. Maybe...

I think that when you study history, not having an easy career path is just normal xD.

It's actually funny that I take against this series so much because one of my real interests is representation and how old narratives and historical figures are re-represented. And I realise I'm being totally hypocritical ripping this one to shreds for shoving Benkei and Yukimura into the bakumatsu with a bit of divine shinto for good measure...when I have zero problem with the cast of Bungo Stray Dogs all being named for historic Japanese writers and such...and have genuinely used hello kitty Yoshitsune straps as part of a lecture on contemporary representations of history before.

I think it must be just that it seems haphazard, like it's not been thought out so much...? Maybe because it's from a game. I mean, I'm a fan of the Haruka franchise and have been for a long time, but the Haruka 3 anime (which covers Genpei, which is arguably my main focus) is only piecemeal and doesn't include a lot of the narrative. So if you don't know any Japanese history when you watch it, you're likely to be lost...

So yeah. I dunno why.

On another note, when I was in Japan, there was a whole museum in Higashiyama in Kyoto that used Hakuouki characters to narrate Bakumatsu history, to the point of airing the anime in the museum and having card cutouts with which you could have your picture taken. I don't know if it's still like that 2 years on, but if you're interested in a weird experience when you're there and you have an opportunity to go to Kyoto, I recommend it. It's very bizarre.

I'm still trying to find a place to watch the new Fruits Basket anime but I noticed on Youtube that Kagura's episode on Youtube had a spoiler warning if you hadn't read the manga.

Spoiler
Has Kyo's true form been revealed in the new version?

Spoiler
No, but it has been mentioned...I am trying to remember if in the other episode from the original series, that dialogue happens. I feel like it almost did but isn't given as much emphasis? The new series ep has Kagura mention it and Kyou kicks off at her and it leaves Tooru wondering about it, so it gives it some emphasis. But in my view if you're going to lay those seeds that early...maybe don't have him transform into a cat with the bead bracelet on the ground next to him? Because that is still a problem for me...

I hate waiting week on week for eps, if you get to watch them all together it might be better. I feel like the most recent episode
Spoiler
does things in a slightly different order, but I can't remember how the manga does it.
Yuki putting that idiot in his place is still awesome though.

Spoiler
I get the feeling that in the new anime Kyo's true form will be revealed earlier than in the original.  I wa surprised that it happens within the first few volumes of the manga.

I think the bracelet on the ground was supposed to hint at how important it is, but I agree it doesn't make sense. I think it  would have worked better to not show the bracelet at all after Kyo transfroms or having  Kyo pick up the bracelet while he's in cat form and running away from the school before his true form appears. Even having the bracelet turn in to a cat collar would have worked.

I think in the original anime Kaguara mentions a secret she knows about Kyo and there are flashbacks to when they were playing together and something happened but it's not revealved that she has seen his true form until the night that Kazuma takes Kyo's bracelet  Kaguara does try to remind Kyo discreetly about it when they are shopping but Kyo acts like he doesn't remember transforming in front of her.

I haven't read all of the manga yet but I feel there's something significant about the fact that whoever is the Cat transforms in to the other form and the cat appearance is controlled by the bracelet.

That would be cool to see if its still there, I did enjoy Hakuouki  but though it was kinda...weird at times. I would love to stay in Kyoto instead of Tokyo this time around but sharehouses seem to be much easier to find in Tokyo. Last time I stayed with a place called Sakura house and rented a room in west Tokyo (about an hr west of Shinjuku) for about $500 a month. The problem was, it was kinda far from the action so to visit Asakusa/akihabara or the skytree that is on the east side - each trip on the JR was like $20

I like that one too. I was hoping season 3 would be dubbed quickly. The subtitles go too fast for me.

Alright, I'm gonna try and watch the new version of Fruits Basket but I have tried a few times in the past to watch the old anime.  Its just so boring to me. I guess it's too girly for my tastes, I like action not romance but there are some exceptions.

I imagine the museum will still be there, but whether they're still using Hakuouki all over the inside of it is another thing. The stupid part is that it's a serious museum with a lot of real stuff from the period, letters, artefacts, swords etc. But they choose to promote it with Hakuouki stuff?

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g298564-d2243151-Reviews-Ryozen_Museum_of_History-Kyoto_Kyoto_Prefecture_Kinki.html

This is the museum :)

I totally agree about that by the way. I like Hakuouki but it's full of the weird. I think you have to be able to laugh at the weird. But it's also horrible in places given the subject it's narrating. I think it's also inspired somewhat by the Shinsengumi Taiga Drama as they cover some of the same detail points and it feels like maybe there was some common organisation involved there. The Taiga Drama is less weird, but more horrible in places though. And no rasetsu. Or demons. Obviously...

Slightly off topic but I was recommended Kyoto apartment by an academic peer at my university and that worked for me very well. But I had some academic funding so :/

Furuba is a bit girly I guess, but I always really loved it. I guess it was one of my first anime forays, which is partly why, but I am fond of Yuki and Kyou and their absolute adoration of each other (!!) I tend to be driven by the character more than the plot, though, so I don't really have a preferred type so long as there are some characters I can get on board with. Recently been neutralising academic stress with sports anime, and I'm the least sporty person on the planet, but they're reassuringly predictable :)

@Ponyfan, I agree with Carrehz, that would be one solution. This anime seems to move through on a slightly different timeline although I think Kagura was still around the same point in the original...next ep is going to be

I also love Fruits Basket. :) It's the 2nd anime series that I enjoyed so much that I wanted to read the manga and the first that I was able to complete the original anime before the new version came out. I also enjoy Sailor Moon but I watched the original and Crystal concurrently and have yet to see Sailor Moon Stars.

I think it's Yuki and Kyo that drew me in to Fruits Basket also. :)

Reading the manga after the anime I noticed that the original moved some of the major events around to better fit in the anime's timeline.

Tohru meets Hiro after Kyo's true form is revealed instead of before.

I started watching the new Fruits Basket! Is it a good idea to read the manga or watch the old series first?

I am generally behind on anime. I will often avoid anime people recommend to me all the time because I hate the hype. I can't explain why, but I watched Madoka Magica only a few weeks ago when it came to Netflix.
I had been warned that it would make me cry and I knew the overall plot (and twist) but it still made me cry on the last episode. I guess I did not expect it to be so pro-female. I am used to women and girls to be objectified and sexualized in anime. I was pleasantly surprised Madoka did not do any of that despite the moe character design. I am bitter, huh?

Before starting Fruits Basket the last anime I watched in full was Little Witch Academia, which I absolutely adored. I wish they made another LWA series, I haven't enjoyed an anime so much since watching new Sailor Moon episodes each week as a child. It sparked joy

I would say Manga, the new series is already forging away from the reshuffling in the old anime. :) Although admittedly it's been so long since I read the manga that I can't totally remember enough to know if the new anime is being more faithful or adding any bits in...

dunno if there's any other fans here.. but Ojamajo Doremi is coming back!!

I'm so excited!! Doremi's my favourite anime (as you can probably tell from my avatar :silly:) and I never expected anything like this... it's been so long since the light novels came out that I didn't think they had any plans to revive it... plus it looks like they've managed to get at least the main girls' VAs back so that's fantastic! It's soooo good to hear them again

Omg I loved DoReMi as a kid! I am not following anime news so I am glad I came in here to see this  Can't believe it's been already 20 years. Time flies, I'm old.

Thanks I'll look into it! I need to freshen up my zodiac knowledge. It's so funny to me how I am always into zodiac stuff like Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket but I don't actually know jack about it. I just knew back in the day that I was supposed to be Sailor Mercury based on my birthday and I hated it because she was my least fave :P

I also recommended reading the manga. :) I love the original anime but the new version is supposed to follow the manga closer and I've already noticed some details that are in the manga/new version of the anime that aren't in the original.

I'm currently a little over half way through the manga.
