Autographed Ponies - how does marker react?
« on: November 02, 2016, 05:36:11 AM »
I customised a G4 FS pony with plans to get her autographed, but I'm wondering how the marker will fair in the long term. Is it likely to bleed and distort the autograph, or will it stay pretty pristine?

I had considered getting a paint marker but haven't left myself enough time to actually buy one before my opportunity.

I don't know whether to go ahead with it at all to be honest.

Any opinions or advice?

I've wondered this myself seeing G1s signed at cons in the past. I would think the marker would bleed. On a G4 I have no idea, though.

I'd guess it depends on a lot on what kind of thing is used in the autographing. A regular Sharpie will end horribly no matter what its used on. Over time it will bleed, fade, and distort. It might look good for some time, even years, but eventually it'll go sour in some way.

A proper paint marker or something along those lines on a painted custom might work out better but who knows how it'll fare in the long-term. Paint straight on the plastic could still bleed.

I dunno if anyone has tried it but it might be okay if it was well sealed before and after.

Why not get the autograph on a ribbon and tie it around the neck?

I have one signed by Bonnie is sharpie which has faded somewhat (but then it has been nearly ten years) Then I have two others - one signed in silver liquid pen and one with the kind of pen you write on cds with - both are still great

The ones I had signed at the con in red sharpie have faded and bled to the point of not being legible, the black sharpie ones are better but still not great. =/

I feel like a paint marker would be best for this sort of thing, but would have to be the sort of paint one could normally use on pony plastic, and then you'd probably want to add some kind of sealer when you got home.

Or just have them sign a small gift tag and attach it to the pony's tail ribbon instead of having them sign the actual pony?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. ^.^ I decided not to get my custom pony signed, I love her as she is and didn't want to potentially ruin her with bleeding ink.

For signing ponies, your best bet is a scrapbooking acid free paint pen; my Cobra Starship custom was signed with one, and theres been no fading at all.

If a pony has a complete repaint and sealed, then sharpie should be ok.  At least, I have one signed 3 years ago, and theres been no signs of fading or bleeding.

Sealant doesn't necessarily protect Sharpie. There are a lot of factors and it can take a long time for problems to arise.

I had a sealed shoe sole signed with a Sharpie. It was on display in my room for a few years (3-4) and looked totally awesome. When I moved it was packed up and stayed there for some more years (4-5). I was horrified when I pulled it out. The signature was a mess to the point I had to throw it away.

I recommend a Micron pen, they're made for archival work :inlove:  The autographed ponies in my collection have very little fading/bleeding.
