Rehair..what do you do
« on: October 08, 2016, 08:32:24 AM »
What is your rehair method? Have done one method and moved to the tool? How does that tool work? Do you do full head if it's only a forlock? Is it hard to just do for lock?

If you have to do a full rehair do you go close to real color or get creative?

Any tips would be great

Just wondering the same. I've been looking around and there are two methods I think might work for me, three if I use the tool, but stuffing hair in the holes feels weird. And more if you look at the size of the holes... I guess I will try an alternate version of the knot/needle and thead method...
But I haven't tried it yet.

I'm curious, too. I'd like to be able to.

It depends! :)

I use the tool 99% of the time as it's quicker and easier than the needle and thread method ^.^

If it's just a forelock rehair, I will only rehair the forelock (I will use vintage hair from a donor tail). Whether I use the needle and thread method of the tool method depends on the following: the pony, how many plugs are missing, if I can remove the head easily and the length of the donor hair.

I use the needle & thread method (also known as the knot or the wire method). I use the tool when making perfume puff style poofy hair (because shoving it from the outside is pretty much the only option with wool) but for nylon hair I prefer the traditional method even if it's slower. It also depends on the pony, G2 and G4 may require the tool method simply because of the size of their heads. Other than that, I recommed trying out both and seeing which method suits you best!

Ponies are made of vinyl so it's pretty easy to stretch the holes for hair plugs, and you should be safe as long as you don't try to put in too much hair at once. Rehairing sounds scarier than it is!

I have yet to try alternative colours so unless it's a custom, I'll go for hair that matches the original as closely as possible. I love seeing alternate rehairs though, sometimes even a hint of an extra colour is enough to liven up a pony! :)

I'm still dehairing my project as shown here
I am having some trouble to take it all off... but I will succeed. And looking at this I'm thinking the tool method would be better since the needle may be more difficult inside the head...

You need a doll needle if you want to use the needle and thread method :) they are super long and you'd easily get it through her head.

Long nose pliers or surgical forceps are good for getting hair out or heads :)

Thanx for the advice :-)
I guess I will go with the tool method first, anyway the hair is not here yet so in the meantime I will look for the rest of the tools around here ;-)

I was given my doll needles, but I've seen them for sale in craft or sewing shops :) they are sometimes called mattress needles :)

You can find them on eBay searching "pony doll needles" pony is the brand ;)

Thanx for the info. I've found some tutorials about making our own rehairing tools.
I just received a mail from dollyhair saying that my purchase has been sent. So it will be here next week or so... I still have time for more research. It will stay this way for now, and I will try to fix the eyes.
Now just thinking about making some wings for the earth pony resulting.

I use the "needle" method, but I don't use a needle. I have a strong but very thing wire that I cut to the desired length. I prefer this method than the tool because I don't like using glue on pony hair and I rather do knots to secure the hair in place.

I forgot to mention this... Needlenose pliers or similar are an absolute must! I use cross-stitch needles because they have nice, large eyes and are readily available. They are short like regular needles, though, so I need the pliers to pull them through. The thread I use is strong cotton thread. Dental floss can be used too. Whatever material you pick, mind your fingers when pulling the thread! You can use gloves or plasters to protect your fingers.

Good to know, right now I am dmaking my own rooting tool so I can reroot it faster and I'll glue it afterwards... seeing the hole without hair and the needle in my hand made me think twice before trying that.
