Doll customization?

I have a Barbie doll fakie. Her hair is cut and she have a paint on body so I decided to make a custom out of it.
 I have never made a custom before and I'm asking for advice how to start.
 Any ideas what could I use for hair and what to make out of her (I had an idea making an anime character or a girl in historical outfit.)

I usually start with my OOAK dolls the same way I start with my OOAK ponies; with tutorials!! LOL There are lots of great customization tutorials on lots of different types of sites; deviantArt, youtube, pintrest. And I often find that while I am browsing for good information on where to start I also find Tons of inspiration that guides me in the direction that I want to take my art.
