Temporary storage advice please! (Moving soon!)
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:11:49 AM »
While my MLP collection is now tiny, I still want to take care of them.  (And my other similar toys.)

I will be moving in just a few months!  And I have to start packing!

Would wrapping in paper towels inside plastic storage bins be ok for temporary storage?  If not, then what is better?
I suspect that my collectables (toys) will be some of the last items I unpack.  So they may be in boxes for a few months.  (Just being realistic here!)

Any tips would be great!  I am hoping to start getting at least a few things packed this weekend!

Thank you!!

I am sure you will receive lots of different tips  :). Personally I am a fan of Ziploc bags, not sealed completely tight until ready, and a dryer sheet or 2 thrown in the tote. I also recommend keeping the tote on a cool place, so moisture does not build  :)

I'm a bad example, cause when we moved I just put my ponies in shopping bags all mixed up and without any protection.  :P But I think your plan of wrapping them in paper towels sounds good. :) Just make sure your ponies get air while in storage, by drilling holes in the plastic boxes, or opening the lids every once in a while.

Ziploc bags are good, be careful if you use paper towels to not use the kind with color designs on them, I have had them bleed onto my ponies before :(

I've seen those storage bins that come with special dividers for separating and then stacking Christmas ornaments - if there are any still in stores, they'd probably be on sale right now.

I'm not sure if the dividers would make spaces large enough to separate ponies, though - I might have to bring a pony with me to the Container Store next time I go, in case they still have any of those bins left, lol.

Speaking of the Container Store, they sell lots of different kinds of inexpensive deodorizers and dehumidifiers for closets and drawers - I have a charcoal one that I keep in a bin with some grubby ponies I can't clean just yet. You could always get a few of the style that works for you, and throw those into containers as well, to help keep moisture and plastic bin odor to a minimum while they're in storage.  ^.^

Holes in the boxes... It will look like there is real animals inside this way.Could be funny if someone made that mistake.

I prefer to stand my ponies. I've found that if you lie them on their side in layers, the bottom layers get squished, which results in some ponies getting a bit deformed (especially the ones that prone to standing problems). Just watch for horns getting bent! I usually put the unicorns on the top layer.  I also line them up with ponies of the same pose and similar size in each row - a row of adults, then a row of babies on their back, and fill the bottom layer of the tote or box. Then I add several layers of bubble wrap for support, then a layer of cardboard for a flat surface, and some packs of dessicant to keep it all nice and dry, and then put another layer of ponies. Each pony is in a plastic sandwich bag, or a Ziploc that is not sealed.

Put in some of the little packs that help absorb moisture

I just shoved mine in two moving boxes no protection . They have not being unpacked yet but they have being moved in to the attic for now whilst i decorate and to to that they had to be put in to another box they travelled just fine no marks bends or damage. But I do recommend going with the bag and paper method as above I just got lucky

I put some of my ponies into those underbed storage plastic boxes (my neice gave me that tip & you can also put fashion dolls in them too)I guess maybe you'd want to put them in tissue paper or something too if moving. :)

Would "Clear and Free" dryer sheets work just as well.. or are you talking about the scented ones? :)

I'm going through this right now and employing the same method I used last time I moved. Tissue paper and under bed storage boxes.

The under the bed boxes are the perfect height for most G1s (though the boys have to lie on their sides) which is nice because then you can stand them and not stack them. And when you get to your new place and unpack, you have a nice storage box that tucks away under your bed for whatever toher storage needs you may have :)
