Question about dolly hair
« on: October 06, 2015, 01:17:08 PM »
I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in customs so feel free to move  :)

I recently bought some dolly hair to give some of my squeaky butt ponies some new tails.  One of the ponies was a Greek so I didn't expect the dolly hair to match the Greek hair(however any tail I thought was better than none) but I thought that at least for a normal G1 pony that nylon dolly hair was supposed to be the same as what hasbro used.   I was really disappointed at how straight and flat it seems, it doesn't seem to have the same thickness or bounciness as vintage pony hair.

I didn't wash it or style it but would this make any difference?  I also haven't a clue what the difference is between nylon and Saran and wondered if that makes the difference?  Any ideas?

I am going to pop this over to Customs for you. It could have been left in the Corral but you will find more members who deal with this every day over in that forum so you will get a comprehensive answer :)

Washing and styling does make a difference :) sometimes there is oil on the nylon that makes it feel flat and dull.

With nirvana ponies, such as the Greeks, you will never get a 100% match in either texture or colour. Each country used its own hair, which is often very different to Hong Kong/China hair.

Something else to take into account us new vs. old. Vintage ponies have vintage hair ^.^  Time, play and anything the pony was exposed to will change the nylon so it will be different to new hair.

I hope this helps!

what PKW said

also, Hasbro uses Nylon on MLP
Mattel uses Saran on Barbie (at least vintage...note sure about current, but I think it's the same)

if that helps you with texture

Wetting down the hair and styling it can make a big difference :).  I get the hair damp, comb it out smooth, and wrap it around the neck (for the mane) or around one of the feet (for a tail or longer mane).  Ensuring the hair is smooth against the body gives the best effect.  Using plastic wrap or a paper towel will hold the ends in place until the hair dries.  You can also use curlers or straws to create curled hairstyles.  I find nylon hair wonderful to work with, but it does have to be styled if you want to avoid that straight, "just been rehaired" look.
