Squishy Masquerade?
« on: May 29, 2015, 12:43:42 AM »
So I recently bought Masquerade online and she's pretty much perfect, with very few marks and gorgeous hair but she's oddly squishy... Actually, squishy is probably an understatement now that I'm holding her - particularly around her back legs, the plastic in some areas seems to be roughly the same thickness as a sheet of newspaper and I can kinda see through it when I hold her up to the light...
Any idea what's caused this, or are some Masquerades normally just this way?
I finally found my grail!

I can't imagine it's something that hasn't happened before, like plastic bubbles or batch variations in color, I assume sometimes the plastic didn't get coated perfectly in the mold they were cast in.

Sounds like the mould was under-filled or unevenly distributed during rotary casting.  It's not something Masquerade (or any other pony I can think of) is notorious for.

Sometimes it happens... they were mass-manufacturing these by the dozen at a time in the factories.  Should have been caught by QC on the way out the door, but good thing she wasn't, or she would not have a home with you!  :)

Could it possibly be the plastic beginning to break down? I'm not sure how old Masquerade is but sometimes when I'm feeling nihilist, I think about how all these beautiful G1 ponies will basically become powder over the next 75 years, which helps me appreciate and treasure them that much more! <3

As others have said its just a manufacturing thing combined with years of aging differently :) Some ponies are perhaps a little more prone to it than others but in general you could find pretty much any pony overly squishy :P

I guess some ponies are just like that? We've got a couple of ponies that are made of uber squishy.

Overall "squishiness" is based on the plastic formula (specifically how much plasticizer gets put in), but what's described here where the actual thickness of the pony's body is very thin is not accounted for by plastic formula.  It would have been a casting error, improper distribution into the rotary mould or insufficient plastic dispensed.  Aging does not cause layers of plastic to magically vanish, thank goodness.  :satisfied:

That's odd but not that uncommon. Good thing she found herself to your home where she will be loved regardless :D
