Who were your childhood ponies?
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:41:27 PM »
I'd like to know, if you had a childhood collection (or even knew others with collections), which generation of MLP was it for you?

For me G1 was right during my childhood.  SS Truly and Magic Star were a birthday gift to me when I turned two, and I collected ponies from then on right until the end of G1.  When the G2s rolled around I'd grown out of MLP for the time being, I was more into Grand Champion Horses and then various action figures to really take notice.  G3s came around when I was in college, and while I was charmed by the look of them, I didn't have the time, space, or money to invest in them.  While I do enjoy G4 now, I'm really more of a nostalgic and selective collector, outside of my childhood herd I only have a handful ponies I really found outstanding in one way or another to my personal taste.

Here's my childhood 'herd' along with the few 'fakies' (other brands of colorful horses) I had as a child.

Let us know what yours were!  And maybe even how you felt about each generational release based on where you were at the time.

I didn't have any ponies as a child.  I only got my first pony (a g3) when I was 13.  So they're more like my teenagehood ponies.  LOL, I was such a rebel.  Anyway, here is the herd of g3s I accumulated before I became an adult:

I was born in 1996, so my first ponies were G2, but I inherited a bunch of G1s as well from a friend of my mom's, so I grew up with both generations.

And then in 2003, G3s came out (I was 7), so actually I grew up with all 3! :D

My generation was G1 but I never bought any ponies myself. I inherited my ponies from my older cousin who grew out of them. I can hardly remember what ponies I had now though I do remember Gypsy (my favorite), Strawberry Fair and Majesty. I think I may have also had Honeycomb but not sure. I think I had about 15 at most.

G3! Though they were more "late childhood" to me since I got a Flippity Flop when I was 9 (2004-ish). I also had Coconut Cream, Wing Song and baby Goody Gumdrop. I wasn't into ponies or any of the girly stuff when G2 was around, even though I assume I was in the target age group when they came out. I didn't even know they existed until I started looking into the history of MLP later on.

G3 for me, too! My first pony was Tink-a-tink-a-too, quickly followed by Sew-and-sew (something about hyphenated names, I guess...they both came from the local supermarket). My third pony was Star Catcher with the fabric wings; she was easily the most beautiful pony in my growing collection! I think she still is. ;) I've come across many more Star Catchers in my recent collecting, but have never kept any--in fact, I have a MIB one now I need to get rid of--the original one from my childhood, even though she's a bit dirty, means a lot to me.

Actually, my "real" first pony was a McDonald's G2 Sundance (I was born in the 90's), but by the time I had my first G3s, I didn't really consider her "real" MLP. That all changed when I found out about previous generations when I was 11, and I remember frantically scrambling through boxes after a family move for her! I was so excited with the thought that I might own an honest-to-goodness vintage pony. :P She's on my shelf to this day.

I actually just dug out a picture I took years ago of my collection before carbooting and other stuff - basically the ponies I had as a kid. Mine were all G1, I was born the same year MLP came out and I had my first pony (Windy) in 1984, probably Christmas.

Gypsy I remember stalking at a school fete until it opened, she was second hand. So was my Princess Aquamarine; she's missing a symbol and had no dragon until we discovered carbooting xD. Most of the rest were new I think. Not sure about Peachy. She might have also been second hand since my Parlour was.

My sister had about 20 or 22 ponies of her own, but they aren't pictured.

I also found these xD

That one is 1988 I think...I was 6, and this one is even earlier...

I think maybe it was 1986...so I wouldve been four? I really loved Baby Blossom xD She was the trigger for all the future pony love ;)

I had a mixture of G1, G2 and G3 throughout my childhood plus fakies and other horse toys like Breyer. I was born in 1994, so I was in the right age range for hand-me-downs among other things.  :P
