My pony didn't color!
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:30:02 AM »
I had used a baited Snuzzle to dye yellow. I followed the instructions on ponycustoms.com to a T, except instead of using only a teaspoon I used most of the packet.

After a minute, nothing happened, so I just assumed it was taking really long. But it's been 20 minutes, and the boiled water is warm, the pony is still gray! There are only a few yellowish spots on the pony's body. I cleaned the pony thoroughly before placing it in the water.

What's going on?!

I've never dyed ponies. I know it can work sometimes (best with a white pony?), but the dyed color doesn't last forever. I think it has to soak for a very long time.

I'm not sure it's possible to dye a dark color light.  You'll probably have to do a full body repaint to get Snuzzle yellow.  If you want that body type to be yellow, you could always find a bait Lemon Drop or try dying one of the Birthflower ponies.  It's easier to dye white to yellow than gray to yellow.  Good luck!

if you want a pony yellow you either to a FBR or you dye a white pony. gray is not going to turn yellow. it's like trying to turn black yellow (b/c it's basically the same pigment we're talking about). and you can't just "bleach" it out.
also, yellow is a HARD color to work with, so you may have to try several white ponies before one takes the yellow correctly....even doing it by paint will take MANY more coats of paint than even white
also, different ponies ability to take the dye differs, and dye jobs often fades over time

when I dyed ponies I'd use RIT dye.  I'd also let them sit in it for about 2 or 3 hours to get the nice rich color.

You definitely need white or whiteish to go to yellow. I have done yellow from ponies that were supposed to be yellow before and if you clearcoat it, the color seems to last a wee bit longer. Grey will go to almost any color other than yellow (including most oranges) with decent to great results.
Creatively cute and proud of it!  Have a very good day, [you]!  ^.^

Like everyone has said, gray is not likely to go yellow without paint.

If you want a yellow bait, wouldn't it be easier to use a lemon drop?

Like others said, too, the dye always has to be darker than the pony's starting color, and gray is a weird color as far as dyeing goes.  Any dye you use is going to be a mix of the dye color, plus the pony color, so it would be easiest to find a pony as close to the color you want first.  Like if I wanted a bright red pony, I would try to find a pinkish color one because then the dye will work better.  If I dyed a blue pony red, it would probably turn purple, since red plus blue make purple. :)
