Sun-Damaged G1 Playsets - any tips?
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:05:40 AM »
Hello everyone!

I have recently acquired a dream castle, show stable and lullably nursery. Structurally they're in great condition, but they're all suffering from sun fading damage. Does anyone know of any good rememdies for this problem, links to tutorials maybe?

Any advise is super-appreciated!

Many thanks,

xTic_Tac_Toex

What kind of damage are we talking? Yellowing of the plastic, or fading of the stickers? Not sure much can be done for the latter, other than printing new stickers. Hydrogen peroxide can certainly help yellowed plastic, though - I have used it successfully both on ponies and on hard plastic accessories (never personally on a whole playset, but the material is the same as the accessories). I have heard that peroxide treatment can make the plastic more brittle, but that hasn't been my personal experience (though any plastic that is 30 years old is a bit brittle anyway). But I know H202 is corrosive, so I have just always checked mine 1-2 times per day and made sure to wash off the peroxide as soon as it looks acceptable.

I got all my tips from this lovely page: http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/accessories.html (she has some playset stickers too!)

I would agree with trying emery's hydrogen peroxide treatment - just be aware it can make plastic a touch more brittle over time but its hands down the best way to remove yellowing from harder plastics.

i haven't had a chance to read everyone's tutorials, but when using hp the more air tight the better so easy on the small items (with no stickers to damage) put them in small zip lock bags. with the very large building parts (luckily my castle stickers fell of from the heat of the first go which made it easy to use the hp on the inside) i wrapped it all in glad-wrap/ clear cling stuff what ever you by call it in your country :D  and focused on one side at a time. now our sun is very powerful here in nz so it would only take one day - a couple of hours to do some pieces.

That castle looks incredible!

I'm currently working on a yellowed castle wall w/ the Salon Care peroxide. It works pretty fast but it's taking a while to get an even color. A huge improvement over the yellow!
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

Whoa that treatment works wonders!

How do you think it will react to the Baby Bonnet School of Dance?

thank you :) i found some parts patchy especially when it wasn't truly airtight, things that were in zip lock bags worked a dream and looked even.

yes, i did the bow from it as mine was very yellow but the structure wasn't, it will be fine just either carefully remove the stickers or keep the hp away from them or tape a piece of card over that back sticker, that part might be tricky.
i think the stickers can be moved by lighter fluid but i would hate to damage that gorgeous picture :)
