G2 ponies all had these jewels in their eyes. I think it was a really lovely idea (I remember how much my sister and I loved them when they appeared on store shelves.I was already a teen, but they definitely got me back into ponies - well, I never really got out of them, but wasn't actually playing with them anymore either. the next Christmas has found me under the tree, playing with my ponies again, together with a freshly-received G2 (Clever Clover) ), and I wish they'd kept it in further generations. though I do see its bad side as well: they were kind of prone to falling out. I never caught an eye jewel falling out, but I do have G2 ponies missing eye jewels. judging from the holes they are diamond-shaped, having a pointy inside. I believe they are made of plastic, I doubt they'd use glass jewels in such toys, but I could be wrong.
