(Non-pony) Paypal advice?
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:37:15 AM »
So, my dad is selling a car, and a potential buyer says the only way he can pay is with paypal. I'm concerned about the fees, since it's a big ticket purchase they'll be substantial. I'm also slightly worried the buyer will try to dispute the charge, since we're obviously not shipping the car, so we won't have a tracking number to give paypal. Thoughts?

I'm guessing he would pay via PayPal so he can use a credit card. I would refuse and say cash only.

I am with you, cash only. The fee's will be outrageous and it would just make me nervous to no end.  :yikes:

Cash or money order/bank draft only!  No Paypal, no credit, no personal cheques!  Get the bank involved for everyone's safety.  Also make sure they meet up at a bank or a court office so the sale can be notarized!

Not to mention, be very safe!  A lot of violent crimes been in the news more and more often while people tried to sell their used vehicles!  Have a friend come along with him, or observe from a safe distance.

EDIT:  Also I think that the Paypal seller protection ONLY comes into play with shipping an item.  Pick up in person does NOT qualify!  He can file a claim and you have no recourse unless you have a notarized bill of sale - but can you prove the buyer is in possession of the item?

I got more details from my brother. So, it looks like the guy is deployed overseas, and so Paypal is the only way he can pay. (Why he needs a car when he's going to be in a different country for a long time is beyond me--but anyway) The guy is willing to pay extra to cover the fees, but I'm still suspicious based on the fact that he could claim the money back, and we'd have no recourse. He's also been pressuring my brother for a quick answer--which also sounds like scammer behavior to me.

The only way I can think of that everyone would be safe would be if he sent the money as a gift.

From that, he doesn't seem trustworthy. Is he the only potential buyer?

Definitely sounds like a scam to me. If he's not available to complete the transaction in person I would pass.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a woman in possession of disposable income, must be in want of a pony.

The only way I would agree with that, is if they are military. Sometimes we do look for cars while deployed :)

I'd personally only take the cash in person (or face a serious risk of being scammed). They have internet access, tell them to transfer the funds to a trusted relative/friend and have them do COD. Otherwise tell them you WON'T be garaging a car for god knows how long because they can't pick-up, and if the car is still for sale when they return, they are more than welcome to buy it for the negotiated price, COD as is your prerogative when dealing with vehicles on any site that I'm aware of.
