Hair Styling?

I'm making a custom of Cloudchaser. (She's the purple one.)

I'm wondering how I could get her hair to stick up like that, and most importantly stay that way. I'm sure I'll have to give her some extra plugs in her head to get the full effect, but I'm unsure what to do to get it to stick up.

I've heard that hairspray is bad for pony hair, and I don't know if glue (or modge podge?) would dry opaque enough to not make it look dull. Ideas?

ModPodge would work and if you are concerned about it being dull, you could always get ModPodge Gloss instead of Matte.

Yep! Modge Podge works great or white glue---I used Aleens craft glue---in case I don't like it I can wash it out with hot water.

i once used mustache wax, then washed most of it and styled it. held it down with a rubber band till it was dry. there was just enough residue to keep it in place, but not dull the hair. since short hair usually sticks straight up. (least for me) i was pleased that the short hair would stay down.

not sure it that's helpful or not....

This is all super helpful, thanks guys! I have some modge podge (I think it's glossy) already from other stuff. Might as well try it!

Another question. This pony is going to be shipped a long way (it's a gift for someone in Australia), do you think with proper packaging that it would still stay relatively neat?

... For that matter, any help on shipping a custom? A lot of my packages get a little dinged up, and I want her to be safe.

Get a box bigger than you need it. Wrap her in bubble wrap. Then fill the box with extra packing (packing peanuts, bubble wrap, newspaper, tissue paper, fabric bits, etc) on all sides until it's so tight nothing can move. Tape well and everything should be fine.

This was actually my plan! Good to know it's a good idea. Thanks so much. :frog:

I do as Kaostat does. My customs are normally a giant ball of bubble wrap when I'm done. I also layer paper towels/bubblewrap in balls outside the first layer of bubbles to take up and extra space when sending things with wings and other fragile things.
