hair styling question

I have a pony that i'm a hair cut and style away from finishing and part of the hairstyle is two small braids that hang down on either side of her face.

My question is, how should i secure them? they're going to be permanent so i wont shy away from gluing beads to it. Here's what i'm basing it off of:

I've taken to using thread to bind braids lately, since I've been having issues with elastics breaking.

Do you just knot the thread or do you secure that with glue or something?is there anything special you have to do to it?

I just wrap it around a bunch of times and then thread the ends into the hair.
