Which kitchen scales are accurate?
« on: July 04, 2013, 08:46:08 PM »
I'm finally opening an Etsy store, but I'm a little stumped. Etsy's seller's handbook is HUGE and somewhat overwhelming. I'm still stuck on naming so it'll be a while before I open.

Edit: New question! Does anyone know which kitchen scales would be the best for calculating shipping costs? I'm not too worried about the price unless its over $40, since an accurate scale would be such a huge benefit.

Congrats! :D It's really easy, actually! Just make sure you have your bank info at hand because you'll need it. I'm fairly new too so I'll let more experienced sellers give their advice, but good luck!

I love etsy and have been selling on their since 2007. It is easy to get the hang of and a great way to network too. Try not to feel too overwhelmed!

I've had an Etsy shop for about a year now, you get into the groove of things pretty quickly, so don't lose too much sleepover it! You're welcome to PM me if you have any questions :] x

Thanks for the support guys. <3 My basically father-in-law (boyfriend and I aren't married but might as well be), his girlfriend, and my mother-in-law are all going to help us. Mom is an accountant so she'll be helping us do all of that, dad started his own business and has lots of business connections, and dad's girlfriend is just gonna help with researching brands and finding out where we can buy stuff wholesale. So they've helped make it a bit less overwhelming.

My local Post Office people said the USPS sells a scale that is under $40.00 not sure if this will be helpful or not. It may be a bit more accurate then a random scale for a kitchen too.

I know lots of peeps who use kitchen scales with great success. But I would probably recommend getting a regular postal scale. I got mine off Ebay some years ago for pretty cheap.

I'm one of those that uses a cheap digital kitchen scale thats really accurate  :)  it certainly didnt cost as much as $40.   But I'm in the UK and I'm not sure how accurate the cheaper versions are where you live... still if its a digital scale it should be ok. Other than that, Ponylady's suggestion to get a postal scale from ebay might be a good choice

I have a basic one from Starfrit, but it seems pretty accurate (and you can switch between Imperial and Metric). I like it :) plus it was on sale, I think around $10-12.

for smaller items (under 500 grams), i use jewellery/gem scales i got off ebay. for larger items, i use my getzi baby scales  i can't remember how much the jewellery scales were, but i'm pretty sure the baby scales were about $25. and as they are big enough for a baby to lay on, they are really good for super large parcels :) good luck with your store!!!

I just use a regular kitchen scale, a pretty cheap one. Honestly, since US shipping is calculated by the oz for first class and by the pound for anything over 13oz, you really don't need anything that's super precise.
