That's exactly the reason why.

I live in Australia, so there is NO WAY I could possible get a Brushables set at a decent price. The only way I could possibly do it is if I organized an American tradebuddy/friend to purchases for me and I pay for the item + shipping BEFORE it appreciates to 150$ >_>.

I'm thinking it's going to be a mix of Brony and Collector based. Like the Glitter Wysteria and Pinkie Pie floating around.

Collectors rake in lots of cash, but bronies even moreso. Hasbro won't want to shut off such a lucrative cash cow.

I know the Fair pony's price has been confirmed at $50. Has the SDCC pony's price been confirmed?

sailorstitch

Its been confirmed its the same release...so I would guess it will be around the same price.

Really? Last I heard SweetTune said the Fair pony was different from the SDCC pony. Unless I misunderstood the post......

Hmm... I'd have to agree with Hathor. Seems much more likely that the SDCC pony will be an FS style pony. The target audience at SDCC is not going to rush for ANOTHER release of the mane six. Collectors may not rush for that either (as much as glitter ponies are awesome, I'm not paying more than retail for more mane six characters, even if there are a couple new characters thrown in). The Discord idea sounds pretty plausible, and I think it would be super neat to see. I don't think Hasbro would put a lot of effort into a play size version of Discord (maybe a blindbag), so this might be our one shot at getting him in a decent sized figure.

Does anyone know what someone attending SDCC has to do to order one or do they just show up?  Two of my non-pony friends are going and they have offered to pick it up for me if I give them money.
just show up to the booth and buy one before they sell out

It's a little more complex than that I'm afraid. Let me see if I can find my friend's horror story from last year.....

Found it!

Quote
I had no idea how popular that pony was. I usually show up at 10am when
the doors are already opened and no lines to the exhibit hall. I got to
the convention extra early just for you, 6:30am. So I waited in line for
30 minutes until they let us enter the building at 7:00am and I ran
upstairs to the Sails Pavilion to get in the hasbro ticket line (the 2nd
Line). I was told Friday that tickets were going to be passed out at
8am, I was maybe #200 in line, that line stretched outside of the sails
pavilion and became an amusement park line. After an hour and a half
(8:30am), I got the ticket to go down stairs to get in line at the
Hasbro Booth. I know enough about Con to know every booth keep stock on
a daily limit of figures that they sell. So I knew I had to find a way
downstairs to get to the hasbro booth before the masses. And
unfortunately the doors open at 9:30am and my ticket said "can't be used
until 10am", I knew it could be sold out by then. But I was hoping for a
 miracle.

I found a way to sneak past security using my pro badge, I made it down
stairs through the back of the convention, which places me closer to the
hasbro booth. (score) I made nice with some people that had handicap
stickers, they were waiting to be let in early before the main crowd.
They were let in at 9:25am, and so was I. Miracle.

I ran to the Hasbro booth, and got in my 3rd line, I think I may have
been #25, don't even know how those people even got there before me, but
 # 25 is better than 200. A guy walked up to me and asked if I was buying
the Transformers Bruticas for $100. I said no, so he asked if I could
buy him one. He seemed kind of shady like an exhibitor that was going
back to his booth to sell it for $400, and he more than likely had
bought his limit. But I said sure as he passed me the $100. Just as he
did, a mad rush of people came out of no where getting in line for
Hasbro, it wrapped around the booth, and they started a 2nd line away
from the booth by the back wall. Insane.

The line began to move and the Hasbro security guard asked me for my
ticket, I showed it to him, and he said I can not go in until 10am, I
said I had a panel I needed to be in at 10. He did not care. "Here take
mine" I heard as the shady guy handed me his Friday ticket from the day
before, which the guard then accepted. So I was allowed in. Another Miracle.

As I said, I was maybe #25 in line, and when they reached the 4th person
in front of me, they pulled down the Pony sign that said "In Stock." I
could not believe it, to come so far and to be so close. And the lady
said they were not just out of Pony's for the day, they were out of
Pony's for the rest of the show. You should have heard the gasp, and
shrieks of horror that came from people. I could only imagine the anger
on the other 1000 people behind me in line when they found out. And
worse of all, I dreaded having to tell you this bad news. It has always
been a challenge getting you your ponies every year, but this year was
by far the worse, but to to fail you, is what made it even harder. I am
 so sorry. :-( :'(

If the Fair and SDCC do both have the same pony, my friend will be happy that he doesn't have to repeat this again this year. I felt bad that he went through all that for nothing.

Oddly enough, I can see them doing a nonpony character more than I can see them doing a nonbrushable. And let's face it, Discord is not very brushable, as designed. That's why my vote goes to Steven Magnet!

(I'd love a Discord, mind you, even though I'd never be able to get one.)

I really hope it's not Discord, though the use of the word "figure" makes me think you could be right Hathorcat.

Though I guess if it was then at least I wouldn't feel obliged to add it to my collection so it would save me some money! :p

Wow this thread grew! :)

I have a question, can this new SDCC 2013 Pony raise or lower the price of the 2012 Derp on ebay if its a G4? Im guessing it might make her more expensive or no change at all.... Im asking because Im looking for her MIB....but ebay is kinda crazy. Wondering if I should buy one somewhere now in case her value jumps.

I don't expect that the new SDCC release will affect the market price if 2012's SDCC pony. Her price may vary due to the passage of time alone, however!

The speculation about a non pony figure is interesting. I really hope for a pony, myself! If they make Discord or something else, I guess that'd be cool, too!

I hope we don't see Twilight Sparkle in her "final form" as the SDCC pony. Retail shelves are going to be littered with her in the coming months!

They will be making a Loa pony!

I knew it! :D

sailorstitch

Really? That would be cool - do you have the link to the post?

Last year Hasbro confirmed that from now on the exclusives would be the same so that would be brilliant if the Fair have managed to negotiate themselves something completely unique! And it would certainly point at something different and less FiM orientated - perhaps a G3 as a G4 would be more likely at the Fair and something completely brony focused at SDCC.

Ok, I went back and read some of SweetTune's post about the Fair again. I couldn't remember exactly where I read it, but I knew it was on the Fair board. Somebody else over there asked if the Fair and SDCC were getting the same pony. SweetTune said that due to her contract with Hasbro she's not allowed to answer that right now. So it could go either way. This was in the massive 43+ page thread about the ticket sales. The way she worded a few things gave me hope that they might be different ponies. But that might just be wishful thinking.....
