Any tips for deflocking where there is chunks of dried glue?
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:53:25 PM »
Can someone please give me some tips when deflocking pony heads where there is excessive amounts of dried crusty glue? Its always at the very top of the forehead, where I seem to have the most issues. I never ran into any issues before where there was a fair amount, but sometimes its just overflow to the point where there are mountains.  Some people sure love glue!  Ugh...

If there's not any decoration to worry about, some nail polish remover might eat away at the glue pretty well.

I always deflock with acetone.  Keep away from paint but otherwise you're good.

I don't deflock very often to be honest. But I soak the pony in boiling water and sugarsoap as thats normally the best way to start the glue softening. Then use acetone or paint stripper with a nail brush to remove the glue and flocking. However always make sure to take all the necessary precautions when using such chemicals - i.e. ventilation, protecting your skin/eyes.

I hear there are some non-toxic household things you can use to unstick glue, like alcohol, cooking oil, vinegar, and baby oil.

Sugarsoap?

Hmmm...something you may not have in the US to be fair. Its a bit of an old fashioned product. You can pick it up here in DIY or hardware shops. Sugarsoap is also good at shifting yellowing on plastic and I have used it on some of the harder plastic pony items over the years but primarily I have used it to loosen flocking glue in the past.

According to wikipedia the closest North American equivalent is tri-sodium phosphate.  Which funny enough doesn't always contain actual TSP.
I've seen this at every hardware store.

Not sure whether wikipedia is always the most reliable source of info :P But to be honest having a quick google the same information you have listed seems to be what many other sites says.

I would just advice to be careful the first time anyone uses it - unless you are buying a product with the same chemical base as sugarsoap I cant testify to what it will do. But if its similar hopefully it has all the same good effects and no bad unexpected ones :)

100% acetone is the only thing and easiest thing to get rid of glue :) don't bother using nail polish remover, it's too watered down.
