"Big-headed" flutter ponies?
« on: February 08, 2013, 10:26:14 AM »
Alright, so I was looking through a lot of flutters I received, and noticed one of my two Rosedusts has a somewhat fatter head than the other. It's subtle, but I checked and double checked, and it's there. I looked up the first and second releases of her, but couldn't find any mention of a different head shape  It looks almost like the "normal" head somehow got expanded a tiny bit, like a balloon being blown up.

Then the other day, I saw somebody on here mention they were selling a "big head" flutter. Will I finally learn the deep, dark truth about flutters?! Is "big-headedness" a well-known feature? What's up with these li'l guys??

Yes there are two versions of many flutters - Smaller Head and a Larger head Version - at first thought to be the difference between the 1986 release and the 1987 re-release - however ponies that were not re-released have been found with the larger heads too. So that rumor was debunked. I believe the difference is from different factories myself. - Same as the small and larger symbol variations in BBE Babies and certain other ponies.

It is super obvious in the Honeysuckle pose especially.  The small-head versions have a MUCH greater "reach" with their legs and their heads are tilted slightly.

Also, the big-headed flutters have a dopier smile, while the small-headed flutters had a snootier smile. ;)

I have seen the variation for all the store-bought first set of flutters.  I'm not sure if the variation exists in Cloud Puff and Wind Drifter's poses, anyone know?

Yes as others have said all of the first set of flutters [plus Yum Yum] have 2 distinct releases - which is most apparent in the head width in those in the Rosedust pose and the length of leg in the Forget me Not pose.

Its clearly something affecting all ponies within the first set however Flutter poses are stamped with 2 different dates - 1985 and 1986 so clearly the changed the mould for some reason during the course of production.

There are also two different styles of US boxes, one with art of the Honeysuckle and Morning Glory standing coyly on either side of the logo . . .

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/hautelikecouture/IMG_1543.jpg

. . .  and one where Honeysuckle and Morning Glory are divebombing, ha ha!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/horses_mint/My%20MIB%20Flutter%20Ponies/MIBLily.jpg

BUT there is no correlation between the box art and the flutter poses either.  For example, my small-headed childhood flutters came in the "standing coyly" box, but the "standing coyly" boxed Rosedust I linked to is LARGE-headed.

(Lily is small-headed.  You can see her mouth is less "smiley" and also her eyes don't really face the same direction as Rosedust's.)

Hmm... my two different ones are both stamped with 1986. I guess it's not a different-year mold either. These two ponies also seem to have a different arrangement of their legs - at first I thought one was just warped, but it wouldn't change when I boiled her.

I like the dopey big-headed ones better, lmao! For some reason they're just so lovable to me!

I have two different Morning Glorys, one has a big head and one has a little head, I just thought she was a factory error! I don't like the big headed flutters, they're awkwardly shaped and they have beaks. >_> Well, looks like beaks anyway, like parrot beaks where the top half is curled over. Maybe it's 'cause my first Morning Glory was the small headed one, the second one just looked weird to me from the start.

I had no idea there were different head sizes in the flutter line!  Is there also a difference in price?

I dug up some old pictures of the big-head/small-head Honeysuckle pose! :)

Peach Blossom is small-headed, Honeysuckle is big-headed.

As you can see, the small-headed pose has a bigger stride!  She is also more "swan-necked".

The small-head pose also looks slightly to the left, while the big-head pose looks straight ahead.  Much different facial expressions, too . . . The small-head pose is less "smiley" and their eyes look different.  (The big-head pose looks sleepy, almost?)

A scan of small-headed Forget-Me-Not and big-headed Honeysuckle.

The difference is more suble in the Rosedust pose, but you can tell by the mouth, head size, and the foot placement.  The big-headed pose has all four hooves almost in a square, while the other pose has the two righthand hooves closer to each other than the two lefthand hooves.

As far as pricing goes, there's no real difference AFAIK.
