Restoring Twinkle Eyes with nail polish (pic heavy)
« on: January 10, 2013, 12:01:51 PM »
So, I've got a somewhat baity Masquerade-- age spots and the top of her head needs rehairing due to an embarrassing haircut. Also, she has no shininess on her eyes at all. I figured that she would be a good subject for a little experiment. I tried painting on a layer of iridescent nail polish. Specifically I used Sally Hansen Nail Prisms "South Sea Pearl" and I'd say it looks fairly nice. Here's my result, as compared to a TE pony with very good shine on their eyes:

It looks slightly cloudy, but it does seem to be an improvement from the blank stare of a TE that has lost her twinkle. Here she is next to Locket's nearly perfect TEs for comparison.

Probably you might not want to paint nail polish on the eyes of ponies who are otherwise in very good condition, but this seems to work fairly well for a restoration of a pony with a lot of issues.

I decided to try it out on another pony with similar issues-- Fizzy, who also has age spots and has been partially rehaired. This time, I took the trouble to take "before" pictures of her blank eyes.

After, with silly husband.

What do you think?

Looks nice I think...honestly, it's a little hard to tell the difference from the photos, but I suspect it looks better in person.

Although aside from the haircut, I'm having a hard time seeing how either of those are baity...

I suppose they're not that bad, but the fact that they both have "pony cancer" means that they'll never be mint anyway, so I figured I wouldn't be losing out on anything by experimenting with them. :)

Great work! You are right that perhaps it looks a little less defined the edges of her gem but its a pretty minimal difference and I think they look brilliant!

Oh, I didn't mean "bait" as in only fit for customization, but more as an exaggeration of their relatively poor condition. I love them no matter what-- they're my girls!

And please, go ahead and use the pictures and anything you like. Your page taught me a lot about MLP restoration when I was getting started, so it'd be my pleasure.

They look much better. I think the way to keep the definition of the edge of the crystals would be to leave each edge blank without nail varnish. :)
