Seriously? This better be a mistake - Local pickup scam
« on: September 17, 2012, 03:05:29 PM »
So a buyer did a buyitnow for some ponies and paid immediately. She's a couple states away and picked the "local pick-up" option...which is free.

You have to actually choose this option, so I very very much doubt this was a mistake. Shipping was $3.99 and I'm very annoyed. I just sent her a message telling her that I would ship the item as soon I received the payment for shipping.

Depending on how she responds, I will be updating this post. If it's an honest mistake, that's fine. If not, then I will be updating this post to include the buyers name. I just have a really bad feeling about this.

It's really sad people milking people for money :/
I mean it's only $3.99- Some shipping I see on ponies (for one) is $10!

If she responds and says it was a mistake and pays I will be fine.

However, if she doesn't respond, disappears or says she won't pay I will be very upset. Considering she has a lot of feedback and has paid for a ton of items recently I'm doubting she accidentally picked the "local pick-up". I mean, you have to confirm a million times when you pay through paypal too! So at some point she would notice that the total is way too little.

It cost me 50 cents to list this item and then it will cost me 40 cents (or whatever) even if I refund her paypal payment. So if she decides to not pay, I will be out almost $1 for absolutely nothing.

I guess I should take off the local pick-up because people can't be trusted.

I personally would never do local-pickup.  There are way to many risks involved by doing so.

Well, it's possible that although her listed address is far away from you, she's currently visiting somewhere that IS close enough to you to do local pickup. I'd definitely be wary, though... If that was the situation, she should have contacted you and let you know. As it is, it really does come across as her trying to cheat you.

I think taking the local pickup option off future listings might be a really good idea, just to avoid situations like this. You don't necessarily have to stop offering it all together, just maybe leave it off unless someone actually asks if it's an option.

I would only do a local pick-up for cash only. Never with paypal. And honestly, this was something I considered useful for heavy items. But yeah, obviously I can' trust people so I am going to edit my auctions.

Edit to say: Looks like I'll have to do it one by one. I see no way to edit my listings in bulk to not accept local pick-up.

Hmm well its possible that she is visiting someone nearby, and its still remotely possible that she made a mistake in the option she chose, but it does sound suspicious   Waiting for a response from her is all you can do right now though

Agreed ^^ this is what I do too. Although I've only ever agreed to a few local pick ups since it can be risky :awake:

They responded:

"Hi,
I think I already paid."

Trying to think of a good way to explain without getting too annoyed.

I'm sorry but I did giggle at that.

I would say "You chose local pick up meaning that you would pick it up at my location.. do you plan to do this? If not, you will have to pay for shipping."

I want to see how this ends.  She sounds totally clueless if she doesn't plan to pick up.

Thanks, I'll copy and paste this as I'm a little heated. I swear I get the craziest buyers for the cheapest items.
