Brown mold... can I stop it?
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:22:45 AM »
I got a very awesome Thundercloud in the mail recently. The seller had said that there is nothing really wrong, and he just needs a good cleaning, but they forgot to mention that he has lovely brown mold spots all over him that did not show up in the pictures very well.

It's really sad because he has such beautiful hair!

Anyways, he has brown spots on him with a small darker brown spot in the centre, which I have read is mold and will spread.  So far I have cleaned him with soap and water, and also filled his body and head with boiling water to try and disinfect him. Hehe it was like he was a pony teapot. He definitely got heated up quite hot, so hopefully that kills mold.  I have also attacked him with some acetone on the spots. Also I let him dry out as well as I could, so the moisture doesn't fuel further growth.

Does the mold still spread on him and to other ponies after boiling? Do still need to worry?  I don't want to have to quarantine him, poor guy. Suggestions?

EDIT: Oh yes I forgot to mention his body is slightly faded and slightly regrinded (reground?) and the insides of him are slightly sticky so I think he is breaking down a bit.

I don't think it spreads to other ponies, but those brown marks never go away :(

Yeah I am at peace with the fact I can't get the brown spots off. He still looks really nice to me. I just don't want him to be contagious.  Thanks for your answer  :)

Those are spots caused by bacteria. The bacteria is likely dead by now so it shouldn't spread. There's not much that will get rid of it.

Unfortunately, there's nothing out there, that I know of, that will get rid of the spots. :(

And don't worry, this will not spread to other ponies. That's just an old pony collectors tale.  ;) Keep the ponies clean and the humidity levels low and you shouldn't have any problems with an outbreak of mold... just like in your bathroom or kitchen.  :satisfied:

Alas yes he has "cancer" by the sound of it...its incredibly common in Thundercloud unfortunately. He is not going to be contagious to other ponies but if part of his plastic has broken down then it may continue and over the years other patches could appear but he is such a handsome gentleman no matter his condition and especially if he has gorgeous hair!

I can fix this!!

First soak an needle in acetone and push it through the black dot in the center o the brown ring surrounding it. Wiggle it a lot. Remove the needle and swab the area with acetone. You may need todo repeate this several times and to push the needle throught the brown bit as well. It worked for the following poinies that I have:

barnecle
both thunderclouds
tornadoe
slugger
baby gusty
icecrystal

Actually there isn't a single pony I have done this to that it didn't work on. And all thats left is a tiny mark.

I have a baity Majesty that's inundated with those awful spots. Since I already have a Majesty which is in much nicer shape, I may give this a shot.

I tried this on a super baity Majesty and now I have a pony with brown spots and a hole in her plastic. I've heard of this trick before for something but it wasn't for ponies.
