Sowing Any pony?
« on: July 02, 2012, 04:50:24 PM »
I have sowed a lot since I first got my first sowing machine. I will say that the second machine that I bought only to keep a promise to some one actually works better then my fancy one.

Anyway I was wondering how many of you sow? What inspires you and how long have you been sowing? One last question is; What is your current or the last project you did?

-----------------------------------

I am inspired by my Grandmother who no longer sows. I hear about her projects she accomplished many times. She sowed my mothers wedding dress. I have been sowing a year so far. My current project is a quilt that uses not just fabric but a crochet peace that will go in the middle.

Hello!
I'm a little confused. Are you sowing or sewing?
Sowing as in sowing oats, sewing as in needlework?

I've been sewing since I was a small child. I hate it, but it's useful. The last thing I sewed? I think it was a doll dress.

Sewing as in needle work. I thought sow was the same as sew.

I can barely sew, but I'm learning to quilt.  I'm good with a machine, though.

Abba--they're pronounced the same, but mean different things.  Sowing means to plant seeds, especially for a crop.  Sewing involved thread and cloth.

I do some sewing, because I do my own costuming for things like the Renaissance Faire. C:

All the women in my family sew, and I do too.

I made my first quilt in 3rd grade.  I've made 6 or 7 by now I think?  Plus some doll clothes, pjs for myself, lots of pillows, and miscellaneous stuffed toys.  It's fun  :)  It's also handy to be able to fix clothes, backpacks, etc.

I mostly make costumes.  I make Cabbage Patch Kid clothing, too, but I don't have any pics right now.  I have sewn plushies (though not very good) and dolls (ditto), and bags/pouches, which i am fairly good at.  I've been sewing since I was about 10...though I wasn't too great then!

I have a sewing machine my friend's grandmother gave to me when she got a smaller one, it's an old one that comes with its own cabinet.  60s, maybe?  possible 70s.  it's an old Kenmore.  Needs a tune-up, too.  My last little project was some really quick Rugby jerseys for the Jubilee photo contest.  My last big one....hmmm.  The Samurai costume for my mom...though I just modified existing garments, so that doesn't really count.

Well here's an example of my work, anyway:

Elf...I did not make the shirt, only the skirt, hat, and shoes:

Renaissance Garb--I made everything but the sword/scabbard and belt.  yes, even the boots and fur-lined cloak (waaaarm!):

And last, my mom's gypsy costume...made everything but the tambourine and the headscarf.    I made the bodice, but up close it's not professional.  But still hella good for winging it and being my first one!

My mom wants a Steampunk costume next. XD

I've sewn a little here and there, I haven't had to much practice, so needless to say I'm not very good at it yet, but I am determined to get better. I want to learn how to quilt. So far its a rather intimidating process. I got all the supplies, the cloth, the rotary cutters and cutting mats and those clear plastic squares with all the markings on them that are sold by the rest of the quilting supplies... Not really sure what I'm supposed to do with them or how their used, but the lady at the craft store seemed to think they where essential for quilting..

Apparently I can sew, but the talent was hidden deep or something.  I was making copies at work one day and suddenly thought, "You know, I bet I could make a plush pattern and sew it.  Can't be that hard."  And it wasn't!  I like to sew just to keep my hands busy.

I suck on a sewing machine though.

I enjoy sewing, but machines daunt me somewhat. I could never get the hang of the electric ones in school, so for our Textiles unit I hand stitched a single-bed size quilt, with hexagonal patchwork in 4 different fabrics. Everyone though I was mad, and it took months to complete, but it was so much fun and really relaxing. Plus the looks I got when I whipped this enormous patchwork out of my bag to work on during breaks were hilarious!

Nowadays I mostly sew for dolls, my fiance's mother gifted me HER mother's old Singer machine that'd been refurbished to make it electric. Unfortunately it was tempremental at best, and eventually the electrics broke, so now I hand-turn the side wheel to work it. It sounds odd, but for me it's the perfect mix of precise hand-sewing, and the neatness and strength of machine stitches!

I sew by hand. Mostly plushes and outfits for the plush dolls or critters I make. I think I used a machine once back in high school for home ec class.

I love to sew. I mostly make doll clothes on the sewing machine, but I have made a couple of quilts and clothes too.  I have made some dog costumes but too bad...I don't have any photos.
