What are these? "Oshare na Pony"
« on: June 20, 2012, 06:28:51 PM »
I stumbled upon this video on Youtube a while ago and got to wondering: What exactly are these? It's got the MLP jingle so it's definitely tied to the franchise, but they're so different! I actually think they're really adorable, I'm just wondering what they are really and if they're Japan-exclusive.

Aw, Takara ponies! I believe they were a type of My Little Pony release in Japan.  They didn't last very long. They are really cute and from what I hear, next to impossible to find!

Takara ponies.  The Nirvana forum has many a thread devoted to these elusive ponies.

Edit: Woops, guess I was beaten to the first reply. :P Yes, they were Japan-exclusives. But at least you might have the chance of stumbling upon Takara fakies!

Yup, they were released by Takara in the 80s but were part of Hasbro's My Little Pony line and were Japan exclusives. They are SO cute!

I see, so Takara was its own company kind of? Now I really want one!

Wow, they're adorable! Almost Sanrio-ish...I was completely unaware that they were so sought-after, but I can see why! I tried running a few quick ebay searches for em and got nothing...

Probably the rarest and most elusive Nirvanas ever. I'll probably never get any... :(

Takaras.... mmmmm ONE DAY I WILL OWN ONE!  Even if it's just a fakie...

They're made by Takara and Hasbro working together. They aren't fakies.

TheBeatlesPkmnFan42 She meant that she'd like to own one, one day, even if it's one of the fake ones that are floating around. LOL

Yep there are fakies of ALL the Hasbro pony types...  even the international ones with totally different designs.  It's part of what makes pony collecting so fun... there are SO MANY!  The factories in China just re-use the molds they are contracted to produce from... doesn't matter who's ordering them if the original company no longer uses them.  :)  It's like Dole brand pineapple in a can, versus Store Brand pineapple in a can - they are made at the same facility and branded differently!

Here are a couple of threads about them...

http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,286988.0.html

I think that covers most things but you will find much more if you post over in Nirvana - they were indeed a Hasbro licensed product much in the same way as Bisanti was in Venezuela and Top Toys were in Argentina.

There are some pictures here in the Nirvana gallery as well...

Hmm,  I wonder why they're so incredibly rare? Did they not do well in Japan?

They weren't produced for very long, and there may also be a combination of cultural attitudes (old toys may get thrown out instead of sold at thrift stores and gararage/boot sales) and the fact that people who have them don't realize they are valuable collectors' items to the rest of the world.
