Glue for re-rooting hair?
« on: June 16, 2012, 09:50:13 AM »
It's been an extremely long time since I have customized anything, but I am re-rooting a doll right now with one of the reroot tools made from a needle and a handle.   I love the ease of it, but I know I will need to glue the hair on the inside of the head once I am finished.

What kind of glue is best?   I want something waterproof, so that the hair can be washed and styled once the re-root is finished.  I also don't want to use super/krazy glue either.   It makes an awful mess and often seeps through making the roots of the hair stiff.   But I don't know what kind I should use that will be waterproof, secure and not super glue.  :P

Can anyone please help me?

Thank you!!

Fabritac!

Is this something I can get at Wal-mart?   Or even Hobby Lobby?   I hope I don't have to order online, though if I do I will.  *arg*  LOL

Edit - Looks like Wal-mart.com has it, so hopefully the store will too.   Thank you!!

I get Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue. You can get it at walmart or michaels, as well as pretty much anywhere that has fabric.  you can also get it here on amazon  http://www.amazon.com/Aleenes-Clear-Gel-Tacky-Glue/dp/B000BY6THS

I generally use Fabri-tac. You can find it at Walmart and Hobby Lobby. I've not tried Aleene's Clear Gel and I know some people use Hot Glue (though personally I hate using hot glue for ponies).

When I use Fabri-tac, I wait at least 24 hours before doing anything else with the pony/doll, esp. if I glob it in and let it drain the extra out... I'm still working on spreading the glue inside without pulling hair out from the inside orz

Aleene's clear gel has worked great for me, if I remember I chose that over the fabritac because it was cheaper lol. But it's a nice thick gel and it doesn't seep out, spreads easily and lets you spread it around well. It takes about 24 hours to dry as well, but it takes about 48 hours in my house since it's a little humid. :3

I'll definitely get the Fabri-tac then, as I need it to be waterproof.   Thanks for the help!

Fabritac has always worked well for me and dries in a couple of hours at my house, though I do wait a day to make sure it is set.

I'm bad, I use a hot glue gun and dump a bunch in the head then use a Q-tip to smear the glue around XD

I do to. :P I'm too impatient to wait for glue to dry... I can style within minutes and it's water proof. ;)

This has been a helpful read.  I'm just about to rehair a doll, in fact she sits right in front of me as I type.  I don't know if I can take her head off though.  It's a strawberry shortcake doll.  Anyone ever remove and replace a SS doll head?

Well if anyone can tell me their secret to keep the heat from the hot glue from ruining a fbr then I might try it again XD

I used hot glue once and wasn't pleased with the results - I don't know why, it didn't seem to hold the hair well.

I find that fabritac sets enough to be workable in a very short time. When using it on fabric you are supposed to wait 24 hours before washing, and it does take a while to fully set, but it dries in minutes.

I don't have any secrets. I've been using hot glue for the past 4 years and have never had any issues.
I just squirt a bunch in the head, smooth it around with the end of an old paint brush and then let it sit until cool. The heat has never affected my paint.
