one factor could be her unusual colour scheme. being so unusual, it might not have appealed to mass audience of little girls, thus leading to fewer toys in children's hands and out onto the secondhand market.

Awesome!  I, too, am a catalogue addict!  I'm always making grabby hands and the prototypes and beautifully mint ponies!   :frolic:

Plus the little panoramas they used to do.  <3

They are all "on the moon" in this catalogue! Very random...but the set ups are cute.

Lockets hair in the UK catalogue is even better - its like a giant bouffant!

I think it's been covered pretty well why Mimic goes for the price she does; desirability in excess of availability.  It may never be possible to know how many Mimics were made in comparison to the rest of the set (Speedy naturally is the most common, appearing in two years) but based on over 20 years of purchasing, I'd say on the whole the second set of Twinkle Eyes, like many second/third sets, were far scarcer than the first sets of anything.

Locally, I've found at least 4-5 Whizzers, 3-4 Masquerades, 5+ Galaxy's, 5+ Fizzys, 5+ Speedy's, 3-4 each Gingerbread/Sweetstuff, one Quackers, two Bright Eyes, two Lockets, two Tic-Tac-Toes, and no Mimics.  Small sample size, but fairly consistent, I would guess the second set to be 2-3x less numerous than the first.

It makes a certain amount of sense; stores/companies are going to be the ones ordering, and they are probably going to pick the "new gimmick" toys over the previously released styles. They only have so much shelf space to devote to each toy line, and if they still have remaining stock will probably not want to double up on styles.  Retailers know good portion of toy buying is done by adults, who will probably not be able to pick out exactly which toys their child/grandchild/friend's friend has.  That means that most of the second/third sets may have sold mostly through the biggest stores who simply ordered cases of everything.

I think we're all missing the REAL reason why she's so valued.....

Her Golden Horseshoes!  She's a descendant of the first Unicorn that was given the magical Golden Horseshoes.

Legend of the Golden Horseshoes:
1.   Showed the Future
2.   Had the Power of Blazing Light
3.   Allowed you to know others thoughts
4.   Allowed you to fly on a cloud!

I actually thought it was sort of obvious!  :P

Being featured in the cartoon episode has always been one (though not the only) factor in a pony's desirability.  Same reason why Applejack/Twilight/Posey/Firefly/Surprise/Sparkler are popular right now, due to being the original basis for G4's main cast.  Particularly Applejack, since she's almost unchanged.

I suspect that she's one of those ponies where you need to have one to truly appreciate her.

I felt the same about Icey for a long time - overpriced, not paying that for him, don't see why he's worth so much! Then I got mine (for a fab price!) and as soon as I had him in my hands I could totally see why so many people want him. :)
