I suggest three places...

go "shopping" here in the Arena in the "For Sale - For Auction" thread, or go to Thrift stores and dig trough their toy bins... or start hitting garage sales like a mad-pony!!! :D

does that help?  :3

Buy in lots on ebay if you can :) They average out to be cheaper than buying single ponies if you're careful. Thift stores, flea markets and garage sales can also be a cheap way to boost your collection. Arena sales are usually reasonably priced too.

As for what generation, G1s will be a bit more expensive than G3s (which are dirt cheap for the most part right now). G2s are mostly cheap, but have a ton of Euro-exclusives which can hurt your wallet.

ETA: Also, if you're unsure of a pony's going rate, feel free to make a Price Check thread :) Other members will be happy to help and it could save you from overpaying.

Yes, going to thrift stores can be lots of fun if you can find ponies there.  It's like a treasure hunt, you never know what you will find!  On the other hand, it can be frustrating if thrift stores or garage sales in your area never seem to have ponies (this I know first hand.)

If you are going to buy online, I would suggest first doing your research.  Determine what you like and maybe even set a few themes for yourself.  What colors do you like?  Breed?  Any kind of theme (like flowers, weather, art, food)?  These might give you a goal rather than being overwhelmed with choices in the sales forum or on ebay.

I would suggest looking through a bunch of pony pictures. Eventually you will see a few that stand out, and then you can hunt them down on ebay or other places.

If you just want an instant collection, I like everyone else's suggestion of buying a pony lot.

I think the best way to start is to spend your time surfing through the pony websites where you can see all the G1s, all the G2s and all the G3s...and from there see which ones take your fancy!

After you have decided which group or groups you prefer...hitting up the for sale boards on the Arena is the best priced bet for expanding your collection into other gens!

Have fun...

I never have luck with thrift stores, so I second the recommendation of buying lots on eBay. :)

I totally agree with this.  :)

This is a great g1 website:

http://www.kimsites.net/dreamvalley/index.html

G2s:  http://gen2.aien-hime.com/

And g3s (but she also lists previous generations:) http://www.strawberryreef.com/

Look around and get an idea of what you like.  Make a wishlist.  And then you can either post your list here, check sales threads and/or hunt on ebay.  Ebay lots are a great place to look to start off your collection.  I also recommend getting price checks so that you have an idea of how much you want to spend.

As others have said, thrift stores/antique stores/flea markets/garage sales and swap meets are good places to look as well.  Just be optimistic and patient - and don't be put off if you don't find what you want right away.   :)

Good luck and happy pony hunting!  :frolic:
