Custom Pony Questions

I'm a complete noob to the custom ponies. I'm gonna start one soon and was wondering a couple questions.
After you dye the pony how long will I need to leave it to dry? I heard rit dye leaks.
For a G3 pony how much hair hanks will I need?
And why shouldnt I use nail vanish remover to remove the cutie marks?

rit dye i think takes a minimum of about 3 months to set but the longer you leave it the better also some colours take longer to set than others and can bleed for aaaaages.
i think 1-2 hanks should be enough for an average g3 but1-3 would give you thicker hair.
Nail varnish doesnt really remove cutie marks it just kinda smears it. pure acetone is the way to go.

Some Rit dye colors have been known to fade years later. Blue is one that has been observed by multiple people as fading and going splotchy after 5 years.

I usually stay away from dyed baits but when I do use them I let them set for several months.
One pony hank from Dollyhair.com is enough to rehair 1 adult G1 or G3 pony.
As Stormpony6 mentioned regular nail polish remover tends to smear the the paint and can cause staining.

I highly recommend Goof Off instead of nail varnish remover. It is really effective for removing cutie marks, and for removing paint if you mess up on the first try!

I've seen your ponies (and may I saw theyre gorgeous  ) and if you stay away from the dyed baits do you airbrush them to get the colour? Because 3 months is a looong time xD
And any air-brushing users, how long would it take for airbrushing to dry?

Does air brushing give the same feeling as dying? I heard you have to put a gloss over it or something.

I airbrush.  I do a coat, let it dry a couple of hours, and do another coat.  Repeat as needed until you get the color you're looking for.    I use cheap acrylic craft paints - I like Apple Barrel and Folk Art, watered down a bit.  I seal it with a spray on matte sealer, or glossy Mod Podge brushed on, depnding on the look I'm going for.

A lot of people seem to like createx (spelling?) airbrush paints. Both for airbrushing and painting. On that note, does anyone know if there is a difference between normal createx and the .... I think it said rockstar? It still had the createx brand on it though. I was going to buy some but I wasn't sure. Also I saw they had translucent paint. I'm wondering how well that works and exactly how one would use it on a pony.

Some people just like a shiny finish on their designs as opposed to a matte finish. It's preference.

I  was thinking about getting an airbrushing kit but the compressors seem a bit expensive x) I think I'll try my first pony with its original colour


Edit: If I did get an airbrush, on ebay I saw like a smaller version. Would that still do the job?

I'm not qualified to talk about airbrushes and compressors, but if you want to save money for now you can paint the pony with a brush or a sponge and get airbrush quality work if you are patient.

You use high quality paints thinned with water and do many thin layers and let each layer dry before adding the next. I use testors acrylic or model master acrylic to do this. You can get airbrush paints too and paint with them as well.  Testors doesn't even need to be thinned first, model master does a little sometimes. Any paint that is made for an airbrush probably comes already thin.

<----- My avatar has a glossy finish done with thinned down Mod Podge.  It's more obvious in other photos, where the flash reflects off of the body. 


On the other hand, my Ms. Pac-Pony was sealed with a matte spray, and has a finish more like what the ponies start off with.

I bought a cheap kit at a local auto supply/hardware shop, it came with the airbrush and compressor for about $89.  I think it's just a standard size, nothing fancy.
