My G4 Flitterheart had the most beautiful factory curl I've ever seen. I've never opened a G1 and I can't remember how the other 2 generations looked. Though I have gotten some beautiful factory curls from G4s.

Now that I notice, my spare bangless g4 Rainbow Dash has the best curls on any pony I own. I refuse to touch them because I'm afraid I'll ruin them.

I voted g1 :)  It has been a looong time since I opened one, but I remember silky smooth or perfectly curled hair with no kinks or tangles.

I don't remember taking a G1 out of the box but I've seen them mib on websites and I must say, I voted G1. G3's and G4's... icky strips that make their hair untamed :(

G1, hands down. I can't say I've ever experienced a G2 pony's hair fresh out of the package, but I do know that subsequent generations had some less than stellar hair-do's when they came out of the box. The G1s always seemed to have wonderful hair when they were brand new, whether it was straight or curly.

I will say though, the one G4 I own (Rarity) has nice curl and has never had her hair "officially" styled. I just twirled her hair around my finger a bit, and it looks pretty good, considering.  :)

I dont remember much of the  hair from the G1s I opened as a child but I have a MIB Sugarberry and her hair is so lovely curled!
G2  Princess Twinkle Star had lovely curly bangs as well.(mine still have her original curl)

The G4s really dont have any styling...sure they put twirled locks om some of them but those cant measure up to the G1. They just dont try giving them a good hair cut at all anymore, its just all about pressing out as many as they can...

Without a DOUBT G1.  I'd almost pay for a MIB G1 just to get that unboxing feeling again ... (but I really wouldn't.  Don't give me that look, I'm not insane.)

G1s - just better quality if you ask me. I still don't understand all the rubber bands and plastic strips that are stuck all over the G3s and G4s.

I would, without a doubt, have to say the G1s!!!!!!!!!!  I love all generations (well, okay, not so much the G3.5s, lol!) of MLP, but there was a lot more quality and "little girl magic" poured into the G1s.  They represent actual fantasy horses and magical creatures to me.  They seem like more of an escape from reality, whereas the subsequent generations feel more like the horse versions of Barbie to me...

I don't think there is any question. Right now I'm all about G4's. I think even people who don't care at all for G1s will have to agree that G1s win. After all, they are the ONLY ponies who came with their hair pre-styled. Since G2 (which I love) they have been leaving it up to us to style hair. BOO!
