Aproxy Sculpt vs Amazing sculpt?(Update with photos!)
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:31:17 AM »
So I'm looking to get into sculpting and was looking at either Aproxy Sculpt or Amazing sculpt.
I'm a girl on a budget and the cheaper price of the Amazing sculpt is tempting.

Has anyone used both?
Is one better than the other?

17.30 sounds a lot better than 27.30 to me for a pound of sculpting clay. lol

Thanks :)

I'd suggest buying the smallest size apoxie to start with. A pound of apoxie is a lot of clay, and if you're just starting with sculpting and starting with a product that's new to you why not just try out a little bit to begin with?

This is so true. I bought the largest size Apoxie that the Aves website sold, because it was way cheaper than buying the smallest one, in terms of what you pay per pound.. And I regretted it. It was sticky as heck and annoying. I was used to working with natural clay, and this was nothing alike.

Then someone tipped me off to using lotion/oil/vaseline and now I am perfectly happy with it.

But wouldn't it suck if you bought a big one and nothing made it pleasant to work with at all?

I'm not a customizer, but most sculptors here use apoxie sculpt so there's probably something to be said for that.  :)

I bought the bigger apoxie sculpt and I hope it works out for me, being new to all this.

I haven't tried Amazing Sculpt yet, and only just cracked open my Apoxie Sculpt last night, but I like it a lot! One of the cool things that I know about the Apoxie is that you can paint it before it's 100% cured as it'll continue to cure regardless. Is Amazing Sculpt a chemical curing, or air curing clay? I don't think I'd be comfortable with a true air-drying clay where I am; knowing Texas weather, it'd dry too soon or unevenly or....

Good luck though!

I haven't used amazing sculpt myself, but I've seen some reviews that really didn't like it.  I love apoxie sculpt personally.  (Or magic sculpt, which is the exact same thing by a different company, but it runs about the same price.)

Do you remember where you saw the reviews?

So being the super cheap college student that I am, I went ahead and ordered the one pound kit of Amazing Sculpt.
It arrived in literally two days from my purchase date!
I'm pretty impressed so far.
Excuse the ugly wing and uni horn, I was too eager to test it out and show you guys!

The Resin and Hardner blended together very well.
I was pretty happy with how nice the clay felt in my hands.
I've got no complaints so far.
I will update again in 24 hours once everything is dried.
Sanding down experiment tomorrow!!

Im assuming you mixed it with gloves on. Did you sculpt with it with gloves on also, or with them off? If so, Im curious as to how tacky it was.

I kept the gloves on for everything. It had a little tack to it, but not a super ton. The little bottle is to make it tackier and to smooth out rough areas and to clean brushes. :)
