What Was Your "Newbie" Mistake/Assumption?
« on: March 04, 2012, 06:52:07 AM »
So today I managed to dust one shelf...this is progress people honestly...

While I was doing it I came across my most embarrassing "newbie" mistake all those years ago...my rare White Haired Lickety Split.... :faint:

I paid £12 for her on ebay after I started collecting and I thought she was something special...lol...I have since upgraded to a better Lickety Split but something in my psyche will not let me part with this rare exclusive pony

So come on...we all had them when we started out what weird assumptions or silly mistakes did you make as a new collector [no matter how "new" you are, no matter how big or small!]

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Mine was Steamer. His mane is flipped so the coloured streak was under the pink, and I thought it was some kind of factory error. I had looked at the manes on my other BBs and saw the coloured stripe on the outside, so I thought that the coloured stripe was in both rows of the mane, and Steamers was only in one. I think I even posted about it, so embarrassing :P

Letting my little cousins play with my Majesty... now she doesn't have a mane anymore. :/ Even if it did originally belong to thier mom, that's no reason for me to let them tear it up.

Only mistake I can think of was letting Mom put a red "J" on the bottom of Sky Skimmer's hoof.  It was only because my friend and I had the same pony and she wanted us to be able to tell them apart.  Of course, I was like four or five when that happened so the idea of anyone, especially myself, collecting these things in the future never crossed my mind.

I thought my G3 Kimono was something special. I had no idea she was more common xD

Edit: Something else, when I made my first custom I thought sealing was something only SUPER PROFESSIONALS did, so I didn't seal her. And then I found out what sealing was for. XD

Mine was paying waaaaay too much for the G1 Rice Krispie Christmas baby pony. I didn't necessarily think she was rare, but I thought she was something special. XD

my first ebay pony purchase never showed up.  I didn't realize I could file a report to get my money back, or work something out with the seller.  I remember it being a so soft magic star.  once it was moot point, I discovered there were steps you could take if your item didn't come!  silly me.
looking into a re-branding.

So far my onlymistake has been buying overprized Majesty but that is my fault really. I though she/he was nirvana but turned out to be a regular. Paid 15€ overprize.

Oh wait. I have an other. I was oxybathing Suprise with glitter symbols on my window in the sun. She was there a week and some of her ballons glitter came down. Not much though but maybe that is because mmy oxyclean(or whatever oxyacid was it) was put half in wanter so it wasn't that strong.

I haven't made any huuuuge newbie oopsies in collecting... hm... I have quite a few ponies with bite marks that I didn't see in pictures or notice in the thrift store haha, but they're all common G3s and such. I think most of my newbie mistakes were assuming I could fix certain flaws and then realizing hmmm... nope, I can't!

Thinking that Argie Flutterbye was the "elusive Pretty Bow" as it was speculated on Dream Valley many moons ago, and getting up at 3am to bid on her because I thought she was this "ghost pony who was only rumoured to exist"! :P Still, I didn't overpay and now have a really amusing story to tell about her so it was a nice mistake lol

Oh, and I nearly fell for the White Windy thing but couldn't find one when I was actively seeking her and then found out she was most likely just faded!
