New Zealand customs questions
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:03:58 AM »
I hope this is the right place to ask this. I'm just wondering what value they charge import tax at. This is my first time buying from overseas.   And how much would the tax be?

Thank you kiwis.

This is the right place to ask  ;)   We are here to try and help.

I just posted this chart on another thread: It is only an example at what they look at when determining taxes.  And I am pretty sure that most countries use this method to detemine it.

Duty and Tax Calculation Methods [/b][/font]
There are two generally accepted methods for calculating duty rates: CIF and FOB. Most countries use the CIF method. Some exceptions may apply. VAT (Value Added Taxes) are generally applied on the CIF or FOB + Duty value. The figures used below are for example only.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) A pricing term indicating that the cost of goods, insurance, and freight are included in the quoted price. Duty is calculated by adding all costs together. See below for example.*

Invoice Value$932
Insurance Paid$16
Freight Paid$52
Total CIF Value$1000
Duty Rate = 7%x .07
Duty Charge$70.00
Total CIF+Duty Value$1070.00
VAT = 18%x .18
VAT Tax Charge$192.60
CIF+Duty+VAT$1262.60

Like Ponylady saind, the tax will vary depending on the value of the item, insurance, and the shipping cost.  Here is some more info I found on NZ customs fees , from the Nz Customs service site : http://www.customs.govt.nz/features/charges/Pages/default.aspx

sorry if this is gonna make your head spin

Customs charges, duties, and allowances

We collect Customs charges on goods coming into and going out of New Zealand.

When you bring goods into New Zealand you may need to pay Customs duty and other charges on their arrival. What you pay will depend on a number of factors such as; whether the goods are for your own personal use; whether they are covered by a concession or duty-free allowance; whether they are for business or commercial use.

When taking goods out of New Zealand, your goods may incur a fee if they require Customs inspection.

Find out more about what you may need to pay, the concessions that might apply, how to work out the charges, and our methods of payment.

......................

Fees and charges for unaccompanied goods
Unaccompanied goods are goods that do not travel with you, but are posted, shipped or freighted separately and are for your own personal use. This includes goods for your personal use that you may have bought on the internet or by mail order; as well as gifts, heirlooms, household effects, motor vehicles, boats or aircraft.

The following rules apply:

•For household effects, motor vehicles, boats and aircraft, the Customs value of the goods will be calculated on the purchase price paid for the goods less a depreciation allowance based on the length of personal ownership and usage of the goods.
•Aircraft are currently free of Customs duty and only subject to GST.
Your charges will be worked out using the following:

•Customs value of the goods – the purchase price for the goods.
•Customs duty – tariff classification and duty rate applied to each good which comes from the Working Tariff Document of New Zealand.
•Goods and services tax (GST) – calculated on the total of the Customs value of the goods plus the duty plus any freight and insurance charges.
Also where applicable the following fees and charges will be collected:

•Import entry transaction fee.
•Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry biosecurity system entry levy.
•Anti-dumping and countervailing duties.
•Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand (ALAC) levy.
•Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA) levy.
Where there is no identifiable transaction value, for example the goods were gifted to you, we will endeavour to have the goods valued independently.

If the total you owe us in duty and GST charges is less than NZ$60 then no money will be collected. This does not apply if you are importing alcohol and tobacco products.

............

Example of duty calculations on toys and models
Could be computer equipment, cameras, collectors items.

Description Amount

So anything shipped with insurance/tracking ... has the value of both applied against customs as well?  Oh geez, not fair!

Unfortunately yes :( which makes no sense to me. I mean you've paid the shipping fees for the shipping service it shouldn't play a part in the value of the item at all.

Loa - too true :)
